Hi, everyone. Recently, my 12 year old son was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Before that, he had a diagnosis of ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder). However, I am starting to wonder if he is actually Bipolar. He can have massive mood swings on a daily basis. He was put on Zoloft (an antidepressant) last month, and as his dosage went up, it triggered something called activation syndrome (which is like a mania-type state). We had to go to the Emergency Room. I'm weaning him off the Zoloft now. Anyway, my question is, How do you know if you have unipolar or bipolar depression? Did anyone on this board have the symptoms when they were younger, like my son? The last psychiatrist we spoke to did not rule out bipolar, and now I'm thinking I need to have him re-evaluated for it.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.
Some of the meds can produce symptoms of the disorders... Zoloft for instance can make someone bipolar manic
I would be careful of the meds in someone so young
If you are unipolar you won't become manic.... bipolar swings both ways

At one point my pdoc put me on Zoloft. I bounced off the walls for 3 days. It was hell. New diagnoses: Bipolar.
I hope you can find a pdoc that you can trust. Is he having mood swings of Ups and Downs? Or is he feeling "normal" and then goes down into a depression?
I hope you find a pdoc soon...or talk to the one you have and tell him your concerns. Def. get him off the Zoloft. There are so many out there that pdoc will find one that works best for him.
I'm on 3 - Amitryptiline, Trazadone and Citalopram.
