Most of us have dealt with the toxic friend. Well I haven't before or I never noticed it or friends don't last long around me.
I finally had to cut ties with a "friend" who I had known since I was 18 (I'm 26 now). He's one of those extremely negative people and won't get help; he only talks to me when he needs something. I've tried cutting off contact with him several times before, because I think it's healthier for me if he is no longer in my life. Every time I try to cut off contact he literally tries to make me feel guilty for doing it, and I fall for it.
Well I had finally had it. I was having a horrible day on top of it and I told him goodbye and to not contact me again. Well he started his "I'm sorry for not being there I've been busy" speech and I lost it.
How does everyone else handle toxic friends who try to guilt you into staying friends with them?

You may recall I write that my sister and he husband were in an affair with my brothers wife. It's been almost a year. Mom last week asked me to invite my sisters boys to a birthday at my house for my brothers daughter. I was on my way to pick up the boys when my mom called and told me to turn around. Apparently my brother didn't know my nephews were coming and he was livid. I came home to a...

It's kind of amazing how self centered some people can be.
Are you just a pair of ears to listen to him go on and on? I sure know that role well. I'm with Sunny on this one cut the ties in no uncertain terms and make room for people you do want to be around.
I've had to fire a bunch of folks from my life who thought of me as a therapist they could call any time and I'd be there. Heaven forbid I ever needed anything from them in return...always so busy! You get the picture friendship is about mutuality if you don't feel it's a two way street that benefits you both it's probably not!
It feels so mean spirited but in truth you are doing them a favor! Life is about getting along and being there for your friends, neighbors and community....Good luck Madden!
Be strong and let him go.
You take care of your health and say goodbye. The surprising part is that he will get stronger without you. He will have to and so he will. Who knows, you may well reunite as friends down the road, but not before both of you become new people. And that will take time. You will be amazed how good you feel after two weeks of no contact with a negative person.
Guys perspective. Best to you
