I don't believe it could cause true bipolar but injuries and other disorders can mimic the symptoms

Whether or not it can, if you're suddenly having these psychological symptoms that you never did before, you should absolutely talk to your doctor about it.

Now according to Torrey, MD, and Knable, MD, in their book Surviving Manic Depression, "Occasional cases of head injury causing severe depression or mania have been reported in the psychiatric literature . . . For both depression and mania, it is difficult to assess whether the head injury was directly causal, how much time could have elapsed between the injury and the psychiatric symptoms, and whether the head injury merely precipitated a reaction that was about to occur even if the injury had not taken place." And if that's not enough, "There's a general agreement that cases of mania due to head injury do exist." Also keep in mind that there has been a link established between any kind of major trauma or illness and depression. That all being said, I stick to my original position. See your doctor.

from what i have learned over the years is that the majority of people who are diagnosed bipolar and had a sudden onset of symptoms was because of a traumatic event. so yes, maybe you had symptoms before but they just werent as apparent.

It seems to me I responded to a similar post earlier today.
But here goes anyway.
I was recently part of a bipolar research project.
They interviewed me in regards to several things in by background,including other family memebers who have been Dx or maybe BP.
But when they asked me about head trauma,when I said does 2 skull fractures and several concusions in childhood count?They really perked up,and asked lots of questians..did my personality seem to change after the injury?That sort of thing.
They are looking into the possibilities ,that head trauma and onset of BP maybe connected.
They don't known if it's just a physical thing or a trigger like any other stressor.

When a house is burning down and you are stuck inside the house, who cares how it started. You gotta just get out of the house.

It may have caused your bipolar disorder but when they asked for volunteers to get batted upside the head they had few takers. Thus, the first attempt to do a study of the cause of bipolar was flushed down the toilet.

You may have also been supsceptable to bipolar anyways?

When my son was recently dx the phydoc asked him if he had suffered any head injury and my son told him about a motorcycle accident he had when he was 16 with no helment and over 30 staples in his head. A few concussions from football but other than that nothing. The phsydoc said that could be an underlying cause for his onset of bipolar disorder.

There is a man at the church I go to that had a brain injury in the military. He now has Bipolar type ymptoms as well. I don't think they have diagnosed him with Bipolar disorder, but he is being treated with the same meds succesfully.
