I’ve been on Celexa since March I guess it’s ok but the hospital told me it causes increased anxiety but my psychiatrist feels confident enough to give it to me. My antidepressant changes once a year so I’m impartial

I took this one for about 6 years and it helped a lot. The only side effect I had was that it made me feel drowsy. I usually had to take a short nap in the afternoon.

It's an antidepressant C.... Some of us can take them and some of us can't.... I hope that it works well for you sweetie... Big hug....xo

Chris I use Lexapro which is "twin drug" to Celexa, there basically the same drug with a few tweaks. I use Lexapro because it doesn't cause weight gain and it doesn't case me to be Manic during the times of the year that I need it.

I was on it for several years, along with Lithium for mood stabilizer.
When first taking it, I lost a bit of weight, but that levelled off as my body got used to it. I have a favorable opinion from my experience.

Fun Fact: It's actually pretty well established. It was approved for use in the States back in 1998.

My husband has been on it since 2003, but only a full dose since 2005.

It works well for him. About 10 years ago, he sank into a deep depression. I made him go to the doctor and add Wellbutrin, another AD, but not an SSRI. It really picked him up, and he has been doing well since then.

I don't think almost 20 years is new.

I can't take ADs because they cause mania for me! Im not depressed, either, which is probably the main reason. Lol

Marlene, It did throw me into mania at first, but levelled off. Same with Adderal. haha When I first started the latter, I was out weeding the garden until after dark - by feel. lolol

Still on Adderal, and just spent 4 years of really bad, mostly circumstancial, depressed, inactive state and am just struggling somewhat out of it. Trying really hard anyway. So, I dunno. Not really feeling stimulated, I guess. lol But, HOPEFUL!!

My first SSRI back in 2008-09-ish, about 8 or 9 years before diagnosed bipolar. Prescribed by my GP who seemed quick on the draw for the depression diagnosis upon my asking about 2 or 3 sort-of-symptoms. Seemed a little helpful at first, but got so incredibly sleepy every morning around 10 a.m. that I had to find a place to take a nap for 1/2 of my lunch hour. Embarrassing really.

Not sure if it induced some mania or not, but I clearly remember becoming manic at work to the point I had to go outside and vent to myself (very animated) behind a big company truck (roofing company) so nobody upstairs would see me being looney. It's truly unbelievable how much I was going through those years and somehow not have it ring huge alarm bells on my mental health.

I think I was on Celexa for a few years before switching to Lexapro which then led to a few very unstable years culminating in a very near mental breakdown. I do feel Celexa was probably the least destabilizing of them all but personally don't think it's a good idea to give any of them to bipolars.

I kinda think the chemical imbalances in bipolar people's brains may not be exactly the same chemicals or we maybe are not misfiring along the same synapses. Maybe this is why we have different reactions and effects from the same drug and why there are sooooo many on the market. Diet may also factor in.

I know anti-depressants can really throw some of us and should be avoided. Most that I've tried have gone the opposite way (which may be from ADD?) but I had really positive results from the celexa/citalopram.

I have been on this and medicines in the same family. I was not yet diagnosed w/ bipolar and did not have a mood stabilizer with it so, I can't say too much but, I avoid anything in that family. I would have mania and blackout then wake up in the hospital not remembering a thing a multiple times and I finally just stayed away from it. I took in in high school and shortly after years ago. I am just too scared to try it again. I know it works for a lot of people though and is really a good one. I love what passing4sane said, it is very well put and so true.

Did have meds appt yesterday & going back on Lithium & Celexa after hubs picks up from pharmacy. Hopefully, since it's been some time, I'll have "re-booted" & they'll be effective again for a good while. Meds dr actually seemed enthusiatic, so felt like a positive move.
