Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.
Have you talked to your pdoc? Maybe your meds are out of wack.
I went back to school as an adult, the first year on the wrong meds and the second year without meds.
As an adult, I finally had the discipline to do well. I still crashed and screwed up and freaked out professors, etc. But, I graduated.
My thoughts on being successful:
1. Meds must be right
2. Counseling can help you stay stable and on track.
3. Keep stress down and get enough sleep/stay on a sleep schedule.
4. Take care of your general health! No booze, eat right, etc.
5. Keep stress down. Stress destroys us.
6. Tell your profs. Let them know that you are dealing with a debilitating disability. They can be very supportive.
7. Discipline. Lay out a study plan/success plan for each semester and stick to it.
8. Tell yourself that you are going to do the work and do well.
My best professor, when I told him about my bp, pulled me aside. He had it as well. He swore me to secrecy and then told me that he'd been hospitalized a few times.
You are not alone jn this. Good luck.
I've had nothing but super "UPS& DOWNS"..either "A's or F's"..nothing in between...one semester, i'll get a 3.0, then the very next I'll end up with a 0..so my GPA is like a 1.6 right now...
Not to mention, more than haalf the time that i've been backin college (2 yrs), I've been hospitalized atleast 8 times..one time for 5 mos...so yea..BP BLOWS
But I have learned to tell all my professors right away that I'm BP..most of them work with me
I find out this tuesday is I am suspended from college this semester cause I got 2 "F's" and a "D" and an "A" last semester.....i was in hospital 4 times last semester..and i am suppossed to take 4 classes this semester which starts in 2 weeks, all depends on whether or not i get suspended this Tuesday or not????
pat
Now I am on my second year of college.
college right?
If so you need to go to your guidance office, by law the school has to accommodate your disability.
find out if you have a special services department, they can give you
Extended testing times
distraction free enviroment
People to take your notes
They will also inform your instructors about the problems you have.
when you register with special services and the teachers sign the paper that states they are aware of your disability it is against the law for them to not accommodate you.
normally all the Special services people want is a note signed by your doctor stating what you need.
bring that in to them and they can help you get started.
College drove me up the wall first semester, I went nuts!
seriously nuts
I dropped 1 class after 1 week because I would sit in the room having a panic attack and freezing up.
even now I have a problem paying attention, instructors can stand and drone on and on and on and on.
I take notes to the best of my ability's I also tape record my classes.
i take my tests in a room that is sound proofed so I cannot get distracted, I get an hour and a half more testing time.
I am pretty sure it is the law for a school to have some kind of special services program.
find out, and if they do TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEM!
I cannot stress that enough, the people that work for them know how you feel and want to help you.
I hope this helps,
hang in there school can freak you out but if you stick with it the rewards make up for anything :)
ml
but i went to a young persons unit instead of finishing school. it was like therepy then we done work as well. it was a school for kids with problems not only bp but school phobia to anxiety to being a pyromaniac.. if thats the right word... anyways. good luck x
School is so hard when BP is raging. I can understand what you are going through. Maybe you should take some time off trying to go, and get some sort of job where you don't have to think to much. I worked for awhile at the unemployment office as a receptionist. All I had to do was make appointments and give people forms to fill out.
I hope things get better!
