I lost my dog under a year and my heart doesn't want another one right now. Not just that I live on a road that people drive so very fast and then the only place to walk a dog is on the ditch banks another poor choice anymore it seams. I have a cat but this cat is really independent. I was thinking about a bird. I need to learn about them. Any information would be welcomed. Thanks again, boy..it's good to be back, my hughes net took a dump so a rep had to come. It was a hard two days,LOL.

i've had many, many types of birds. i love `em....they really do have a silly, unique character to them.
many budgies/cockatiels, a few cockatoos, a pair of yellow finch, shoot....probably a few more that i'm forgetting. and in the south pacific, i had mynah birds that i trained to come onto my balcony and take papaya from my hand. i tried for a year to get them to talk, but the best i could do is get them to mimic my whistles. :)

Budgies can be noisey in a funny grumbly kind of way.
I taught one of my Budgies how to sing " Celebration" , by CoolAnd The Gang.
Cockatiels are super friendly, if handled from early age
One thing about caged birds...they can be messy.

I don't have children so I would like a real luv bug
I've been really jumpy, it's quite in my house because everything is like fireworks going off for some reason. So I would like one that really doesn't startle you. I don't want too much power or way too much mess. I want one or two with lots of funny habits, or trickster type. maybe a word or two? Am I asking for the moon?
Yeah I don't like your neighbor either for you and your birds. I feed the birds outside everyday and they beat each other up and everything even squirrels, rabbits, doves, quail and all those others I have yet to look up. They get pretty loud and if you stay in bed too long, let's just they are cranky.
I'm scared of birds!
I had a Cockatiel as a teenager named Grocho that I loved. Occasionally the cat would be hanging off the side of his cage but he took care of it! lol Cat would be put in sun room when bird was out. Just in case.
Then I had parakeets. I love birds. I taught them how to speak/mimic me. They are work in the cleanup department but very social.
If you want the bird to bond with you don't give them a mirror. Then they spend most of their time talking to themselves. Also paired birds sometimes will just engage each other. (mirror concept)
I often think of getting another bird. Cockatiel again. My neighbor has an African Grey that beeps like a car door locking! I laugh and every time I am outside I hear that hey sexy whistle!! Of course I know he cant see me but it is perfect timing and great for my slef esteem!!! lmao
fyi parakeets if willing to learn have the ability to have one of the largest vocabulary.

When I was young we had a dove. It was beautiful. Poor dear kept laying eggs but had no baby daddy so they never hatched. She would sit on them for the longest and never realize. Sad, really. She would sit on your shoulder or your head and fly around the room. She was all white - so pretty. She never kept us up at night but I've heard some do. I think you can cover them with a sheet or blanket to prevent that? Don't take my advice on that one. Oh, I do remember that cleaning the cage was not fun. But I recommend ANY animal - very soothing and great company to have.
I actually got 2 guinea pigs last year and they were so snuggly but it turned out I was allergic and I had to give them away. I like an animal you can snuggle, and I would make obstacle courses for them and put up a pen and bring them outside to eat my grass. Wish I still had them. Do I sound like a nutcase?? Probably. I'm just a huge animal lover. One dog but allergic to cats :(. xo
They are very smart and have their own little personalities. Their sense of hearing and sight are very keen.
Chip - a blue/white/yellow budgie could make sounds like an ambulance far away and an ambulance up close (we lived on the highway then), a dog barking far away and up close, a group of dogs barking, the telephone and many other household sounds.
Jesse - a blue budgie was mean-mean-mean. He would bite a tiny little blood blister on someone's hand if he didn't like them. He never bit me. He was a habitual bitcher and had to be put in time out quite often with a blanket over him. But, he loved the 90 pound pit bull that lived under him. He would toss seeds to the dog all day and he grieved when we lost the dog.
Nicci - a yellow cockatiel the sweetest in the family. Bought as a male but at eight years old he/she started laying eggs. Plink. Plink. An egg every other day for two months and then nothing for the next eight years of his life. He was a great watch bird. Living out in the country now and he could hear a car pull onto the driveway a mile away. He lived by the window and would set off an alarm if he saw anything/anybody that he didn't recognize. Once he kept up the alarm all day until I finally found the large spider living in my plants.
Like any pet, they require a lot of attention and care. Also a bird can get sick overnight and die before you can get to the vet. Budgies and cockatiels are in the parrot family - they are family/group oriented, form strong bonds and are very intelligent.
Birds are great pets but only if you are willing to make a long time commitment to them.
