I've been waiting for a few weeks to see a psychiatrist at my school because I've FINALLY decided I need to be medicated (no shit) and to get some counselling through the school

My university has one of the highest suicide rates in Canada yet they are severely understaffed and honestly unprepared to handle thousands of mentally ill students. The system is a wreck and needs to be fixed. A few weeks for a depressed, unmedicated beeper feels like forever :(

I hear you when it comes to under staffing and under funding for mental health services. It just goes to show that the medical world needs to better acknowledge mental illness for what it truly is.

It's pretty sad that for some people finally trying to get help can happen when they're at their worst and then they have to wait even longer

Are there other services available outside the university? I don't know how Canadian healthcare works and/or whether it is even an option for you to seek treatment from another entity but I'd look around to see what's available while you are on permanent "hold" with the university.

Big hug for you dogs... I don't think any type of schools are equipped to take care of our healthcare so I'm so glad that you've decided to reach out to a psychiatrist... They are experts in psych meds and our disorders... Good for you!!!... Another hug...xo

Glad you are finally being seen and know that you need help. Good for you putting your health first. It takes a while but once you get help and get somewhat stable you will start to feel better. Keep us updated. Thanks.

I live in Alberta Canada and I went to mental health society in my city who helped me get a psychiatrist who dx'd me and put me on medication...check if there are any mental health associations in Ontario you can utilize outside university.. its important to get help as soon as you can... also if you are urgent go to the ER my psychiatrist works out of a hospital as well and you can get help there... good luck.
