If you're already not working due to Disability, go on Disability as soon as you can. That way you'll have an extra $1000 monthly and Medicare after two years, which is actually awesome health insurance. medicare is the only health insurance I have and I've been able to get excellent psychiatrists and an amazing therapist with it.
Going on SSDI really saved my life. It also got my $100,000 in student loans forgiven so another financial incentive if you have student loans.
When i went on disability I didn't get a lawyer. I would say try once on your own and see if you get it before you lawyer up. You're just going to get less money in the end because you have to pay a lawyer. It may not be worth it if your conditions are as severe and multiple as you say.
I got my disability in 6 months without a lawyer. It is possible.
Just fill out all of the paperwork, i know there is a LOT. Get a good pdoc and your husband to fill out their packets. You need someone whom you know well to fill out one of the packets so get they to vouch for your disability. I find it helps to tell whoever I'm writing that part that I won't read it so that they can be as honest as possible.
Best of luck!
