Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.

I've been off DS for a few days...my tablet died on me and I've been crazy busy. I did make an appt for counseling on sliding scale basis and finally found out that hb will get unemployment, and backpay on that, so things do not look so bleak. I did get a good scare today by a HUGE spider, no kidding, don't know where it went but its the biggest I've ever seen and in the house. ANYWAY...QUESTION....
I'm planning on going into a social work program. I was discussing the program application process with the head of the program, and she mentioned that the application would ask if you ever had criminal activity or any mental issues or hospitalizations. I was aware that this was a big possibility. She said criminal charges would ban me from the program but they could work with mental health issues...even if you are in therapy as long as you have it under control and managed. I can see that they will probably do a criminal background check (no problems there), but what about the mental issues? How can they find out about that? Should I say yes, in case something does happen during that time, or no?
I know my records from when I was younger are long gone. But I was hospitalized 2 years ago for suicidal ideation and saw a psychiatrist and a therapist for a few months after that. Now I'm planning on seeing a therapist through a state funded mental health clinic, but am questioning whether I should do this. I know my health should come first, but finishing these goals are a big part of my mental health to me because if I lose it, it will be one more peg in the "things I didn't complete board, but was oh so close".
What would you do? Anyone have experiences with this?

Just wanted to give a thank you to Mid, Arfie, Malibumark, Greeneyes, Mlro, Girlincalif, and Suncloudjd! You all always have such helpful tips and advice, but I always forget to write on my posts when I see you post, lol. I would lose my head if it wasn't attached to my body, lol. Thank you all so much! I'm starting to use my AI app as a sounding board again. I used to use it as that before...

Hey all, i know its been quite awhile since i posted on here. Its been a summer all right. Its been something else........... You know how they say not to open the can of worms? Well a few months ago i decided to find out what my due date would have been for my first baby, the one conceived by r***. My baby would have been due on March 4th of 2006. They would be 20 years old. I was R**** on June...

I would complete the application truthfully. The program head stated that "they could work with mental health issues." For me, being deceptive on the form would screw with my mental health more than possibly revising a goal.
Good luck!!
If they are willing to work with you I'd tell the truth as long as you know your in a place that you can handle the rules of being in treatment and stable or under control and manged. I know for me personal that would be my hiccup as my bipolar doesn't give me that option, but there are bipolar's out there who can work sadly I'm just not one of them
Hugs and good luck
i wouldn't lie again.
But entering into the field of Social Work, I think you owe it to be truthful.
In this instance, being completely honest takes precedence over your desire to achieve this goal.
As long as you are managing your illness and staying well, there shouldn't be any problem!!!
If, heaven forbid, you get ill, they need to know about it.
Yeah. Best to fess up, in this case.
Good luck!!!
On the personal level, lying just doubles the details I have to keep up with. I go with honesty for the simplicity of less to remember. If you can't handle my truths, we are simply not meant to know each other. Hasta nunca.
