You are a very caring person who practices 'minding your own business' when you are at work. That's very admirable however the circumstances have changed a little bit. I don't know how recent your co worker lost her grandson but I think it would be very appropriate for you to give her a sympathy card and personalize it by acknowledging that you are saddened by what happened.
It might be a real ice breaker and she might reach out to you in ways that you can only imagine. It has been my experience that even when someone was angry with me or just distanced from me, I forget about the past and offer condolences and acts of kindness that has resulted in awesome friendships.
This has happened with co workers, family, neighbors and what was at one time former friends. You care enough to write DS. She needs to know that you care.
Please let us know how things turned out. I bet you will be pleased. Thank you for being you. I would love to be your friend.
