Maybe one day we'll clean out the rest, but for now his things aren't in the way. When you're ready you will do it. But it doesn't seem like you're ready to deal with this yet. One step at a time.
You must only do this when you are ready. Some people do this quite soon after the death. Others take a long time.
You can do it gradually. a bit at the time when you feel ready and keep some clothes as a souvenir. May be a shirt or pullover or a set of clothes. I've lost both my parents now. My mum died 15 years ago and my dad 3 and a half months ago. It is very hard. I cried all the time that I was going through his clothes. I gave some
away to friends and the others to charity. I kept a cardigan, some shirts. and a hat. The important thing is to keep something as a souvenir.
let some time slip by and see how you feel
I did keep some special clothes and they fill one drawer of my dresser where I am sure they will remain for years to come. Also, all of his clothes are still boxed in plastic tubs in my spare room. This is probably a really bad idea because it may be harder to give them away.
One other note, I also dreaded this task, but when the time came it was not near as bad as I thought it was going to be. It may be easier for you to deal with a few items at a time as Glorinha suggested. I think this is why my husband's clothes sit in that room all boxed up. Maybe one day I will be ready to release them.
i am not sure what that says about me but i miss her very much and i guess holding onto things respects her memory for me
my advice would be to wait till you are ready
what does it matter if there are a few extra belongings in the house as long as you are not morbidly drawn to them
if you can just put them away and just know they are there i think its ok
some may disagree with me
when you are ready you will be able to let go of them and so will I
Hugs and love to you,
Jan
When my father died my sister and I gave it some time and then we took care of his belongings together. If my sister had not been with me it would have taken me many months to be able to deal with it. Do you have someone who could sit with you while you do make these decisions?
I doubt that your mom would want you to be terribly sad about her belongings.
There is no hurry. Take your time. Be glad you have the time to take. We had to clean my sisters house 7 weeks after she died. It was difficult, i didn't want to throw anything away. The best advice I got was to make four piles, when you are ready. 1.Keep 2. Donate 3. Toss 4. I don't know. save the I don't know pile for a later time. just don't give anything away that you might want down the road. it worked for us. But please, there is no hurry to do anything.
love ya
