Out of the blue, my grandmother (my dad's mother) called me. I thought she was calling just to check in and see how we're doing. But, as soon as I answered, she started grilling me immediately about what language we're speaking to the children in. She bitched at me for teaching them Spanish first.

I explained to her that they will learn English in school and they're learning English from library books and movies, but she proceeded to scold me, saying, "That's not good enough. They live in America, they're Americans, and they NEED to speak English, and only English."

She said that my dad had "complained" to her about it. I spoke to my dad already, and he said he commented to her that we're teaching them Spanish, which she took offense to.

I knew this was coming one day. My grandma has never been shy about speaking her mind, which is what I love the most about her. She has Alzheimer's, so I've never really said anything or complained about how...moody....she tends to get. But today, I really took offense to. Telling me that I'm doing a good enough job raising my children, but more importantly, that it's not necessary for them to learn Spanish since they live in America.

My dad knows how she can get, but yet he continues to tell her things that he KNOWS she'll take offense to or take completely the wrong way.

She's already raised her children, and they've raised theirs. I'm raising mine how I (well, we) believe is the best.

Then she got mad at me for not having anything to say to her. She calls at the most inconvenient times, but I have always dropped whatever I was doing to take the call. Tonight she happened to call while I was making dinner and trying to do a million different things in the kitchen.

Sorry, just needed to vent a little!
