Today at 9.00 o clock in the morning,Pacific Time I saw my new doctor.It has been exactly 2 years since I have spoken with a professional.The clinics here stink and the help that I was getting just wasnt good enough.I was going to a support group for grief therapy and it just didnt work out.And this man is just great.He did something that no other doctor here does..he gave me some suggestions.The first thing that he wants me to do is increase my depakote from 1 to 2 a day.The second thing that he wants me to do is to shut off the tv after I go to bed and not to watch it all night.He claims that I am a bit run down and with all the stories of Washington Mutual I have been stressed,so I have to take a few days off and this is what I intend to do.I will write another column in a little while.My little cat just ran out in the yard and it is pouring here.
I stopped watching the news after the girls died, because i realized that every other story was a horrible car wreck, a shooting, a bombing in iraq. And needed to filter those thoughts out for a while.
But I want to caution you against this "professional " you are seeing. There is a big difference between a pyschologist and a psychatrist. One has the legal ability and knowldge to prescribe drugs, the other does not.
Just as a nurse, a counselor, a chiropractor does not have the abilty to write prescriptions.
I was seeing my family docotor whom i trusted for migrianes, and was on topamax . They never figured out why i had these terrible headaches, but the topamax stopped it. Topamax , like depakote is a seziure medication and can also be used to treat migraines.
The doctor i saw, kept increasing my dosage.. over time.. as the headaches would get worse. I went from 25mg to 600 mg.
I eventually ended up going to 7 different specialists to find that they were overdosing me, and that is why i was having such bad short term memory loss at 21. I lost 80 lbs, and got very sick.
The doctor treating me was looking at the highest reccomend dose for seziure patients.
the highest reccomended doese for migranine patents is 100 mg.
It took a long time to regain what I lost.
So I caution you who you take medical advice from. Especially when it comes to depakote.
