Are you in the Buffalo, NY area? I have a friend who is distraught after the death of his wife. I'm trying to surf and help him find a good bereavement group but to no avail. One church even told him that he'd found one but he couldn't go because he was not in their parish.

What??

Very frustrating. Another he was happy to find ended up to be women only attending and they told him no.

He is falling to pieces and I want to help him find someone to talk to that understands, preferably a free support group.

Is there a Hospice Organization in that area?
If there is, they usually have one, and whether or not you used their services, they normally welcome you in.
Shame on that church group for not letting him attend! That's not very Christian of them. I hope you can find one soon. Huggs Rainbow

Another thing is called your local hospital a lot of time they will have information on the local support groups. You can also the department of social services sometime they also know. I agree with rainbowma Shame on that church. BTw what a wonderful friend he has in you for caring so much.

As I noted, Rainbow has already mentioned that you contact Hospice. They do not require having cared for your loved one. They have groups regularly.

Church groups vary - I've gone to two - both not my parishes but I've never been told you have to come from their parish to attend.

Call the Diocese office in that area and explain. They will give you numbers and names.

Also, Hospice will also give you other groups - besides Hospice organizations. I was given a list of them.

The toughest part is sometimes the locations are a bit of a drive, which makes it harder.

Another suggestion - call the organizations - such as, if your loved one had Alzheimer's, call the Alz. organization, explain and they refer you. Same for any other - cancer or whatever.

So far, any of these groups I found are free. Only private therapy would cost. But call Hospice first. They will have names and numbers - and if not they'll call you back with help.
