Hello,
I am new to this group, sadly my 18 year old son was killed in a tragic car accident on October 18th. I feel so broken without my sweet boy. He was not only my son but a dear friend, we shared everything. Nothing could have prepared me for this chapter of my life. I thought I had been through the worst, and actually was feeling like I was a making a fresh start in my life...then my world disintegrated when I lost my son. I feel so profoundly broken, my whole identity is being a great Mom. I have had to give up so much due to my fibromyalgia, and I worked very hard to be a great Mom. I raised two amazing boys, I am so proud of both of them. My youngest is 14 and I know he needs me so I am just taking it day by day. The pain is so unbearable and I feel like I don't care about life anymore. I went to a grief retreat and I learned a lot and I can grieve, it is all I do. I can fake it in a social situation, but the sadness is always there. How do you get through this? Does it really get easier with time? I feel like I will never be the same person again. He was such a huge part of my joy in life, both my boys are.

Here is my new brother, copper :) He's so tiny! Moo and Tuck were ok with him on first meeting. Rocket due to his severe aggression will never meet Cooper.

I suspect that you are much younger than my parents were when they lost their daughter, but many things are the same. Focus on your 14 year old son, but don't make him feel like it is your responsibility to make you feel better.
Get more of a life without even your other son. You have basically been tossed into the "empty nest" thing way too soon. It may seem counter intuitive, but I noticed that the more my dad had a life outside of me and mom, the better he felt. He took a senior swimming class to improve his mobility, and he always had various breakfast and lunch groups he was part of.
gentle hugs, it is survivable, but it takes time.

People grieve in different ways, so don't feel as though there is a time limit or time frame in which you're supposed to be "okay" or "better". Some people are able to bounce back quickly while others take much longer to cope with the change in their lives. Time is definitely a factor in things getting easier, but let yourself feel whatever you need to feel. Sadness, anger, guilt, frustration, whatever it is, it's okay to feel that.
As others have pointed out, if you're able try to find other things to focus on. Your 14-year-old son is a good one. While he can be a form of support for you, you can also be supportive of him too. Both of you have a shared experience and talking about it can be cathartic for you.
Most of all, be kind to yourself and allow yourself to process in your own way and in your own time.
