I am in a similar situation. My husband committed suicide nearly 6 months ago and my 13 year old pretty much says "good riddance sucker". He did not have a good relationship with his dad either. My 8 year old is a different story. He was my husband's "pick" and did not know about all the problems my husband had....drugs, alcohol, etc. I asked him if he wanted to pick out some pictures to keep in a special place so when he gets to missing dad, he could get them out and remember him. He liked that idea. So, now there is a special drawer with a handful of pictures that he picked out. He goes there sometimes and just remembers. As for your 11 year old, follow his lead and don't push him to feel what he doesn't feel. My son tells my younger one to get over it already but I don't allow that either. They both have to grieve in their own way, as do I. We are moving to a new house in a couple of weeks and I asked my oldest son if he thought I should put some family pictures out or not. Of course, his answer was "no, he's no longer around". However, I think the youngest will want a picture of him and his dad out in his room. I don't think I will put out any pictures in the main part of the house because I want to move on. I have issues with his suicide and think it would be better if I wasn't reminded constantly of what he did to our family.
