My 26 year old son who suffered from a mental illness was hit by a train and killed last week. He was a very important part of my life.I did everything I could to help him live as normal a life as possible. We had a beautiful memorial service. I have a wonderful boyfriend and loving family, but I am so scared of how I am going to cope . I get sick to my stomach when I see a train. I had my nails done today and vomited twice. I worry about my only child left (a daughter) just one year ago (almost to the day) her father died, he was killed in a motorcycle accident. In one year she lost half her family. I worry about my parents who were such a importnat part of my son\'s life he used to stay with them every weekend. My father has cancer, Ive never seen him cry he can\'t stop sobbing. Sometimes when I kind of feel ok then I start to feel guilty, there is no reason for me to feel anything but awful all the time. I have to go back to work tomorrow and I dread it. I feel that as time goes on and the truth sets in that this really happened that it\'s not some god awful nightmare and all the lovng support that I\'m feeling right now starts to wane, Im really scared off how I\'m going to feel.

Just thought I would join this group now that I am a widower. My wife passed away May 28th. She was "The Wind Beneath My Wings". When I met her, I was a drunken, dope smoking, fighting, hell raising biker. She told me if I could get rid of the inner storm within me, that I could be a blessing to people. God placed her in my path to stop me. I have been drug and alcohol free now for 53...

My husband and I got our foster license last month, after 3 years of hard work (we had to start over multiple times due to family dramas and Mom's open heart surgery). We spent a year preparing the whole house, guest rooms, and children's bathroom for older kids of 7 yr old and up. Then we got a call that we have been approved to receive twin newborn premies. What, what?!! Babies!? Premies?!...

I don't know how you feel about God...but prayer and time with God is what got me through my loss. Oh sure I cried a lot...three years after the fact I still cry now and again. I still miss my son. Death of a child is something you get through..not over.
You are correct, the support you are receiving right now will disappear...life will go on for your friends...but it will stand still for you. Even the initially numbness that we feel dissipates and the painful truth sneaks back in. The sting lessens over time...the timetable will depend on how busy you keep yourself and how you channel your energies. Try not to step into the guilty trap.....
I pray for you, that you will find peace and a safe place to rest. You have come to the right place though. I found much peace, love and understanding on DS. In fact people out here, were the only people that knew what I was going through...ppl out here didn't judge me, or turn their back on me...so my suggestion to you is to come out here often and get your strength from us. B good to U...
My heart goes out to you.
We all cope with these terrible tragedies in our own way. Although the feelings are the same we each find our own way of dealing with them. Our paths through grief are our own and what I found helpful may not be of any comfort to you.
People do disappear after the immediate drama of death is over but your real friends and loved ones dont. We all heal at our own rate. No time is too short or too long, merely your way of coping with your own, personal, loss.
My son died a year ago and I understand your feelings and grieve with you for your loss. You will survive it and, impossible as it may seem at the present, you will laugh again. And you wont feel guilty for doing it either.
I can tell you that you will never get over this pain, you are now a new person and really you cant try to be strong for someone else though it feels like what you need to be doing..
When you feel like crying-cry
Dont feel guilty for being happy at time-he would want you to be happy not constantly mourning his death
I wish I was there so I could wrap my arms around you and give you a Hug b/c the worse pain in the world is losing a child
Have you tried writing him letters? journals? that has been something to really help me and also I have talked to my son
I lost my 37 year old son 3 years ago in a car accident. He left 3 children behind. He was divorced.
The fear of trains will subside in time though may never totally go away. As for your son's death, like Jean747 said, you must go thru it to get over it. I have not reached the "getting over it" state yet. I am not sure I ever will. I remember his birthday in January, his death in July, Christmas, and Thanksgiving, the days we got together as family. Being a minister and Pastor, I don't understand why but, I never blamed God or was mad at Him.
My prayers are with you and if you need to vent or talk, I am here.
