I lost my dad about 3 weeks ago to lung cancer. He was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in July this year. It was a shock for my parents and I. After enduring suffering, mom and I were relieved (but of course devastated) that dad passed last month on the 21st. Ever since then, I felt overwhelmed by sadness, and feeling so alone because my friends do not understand what I am going through. I feel no one really does except mom, but somehow we avoided talking about dad most of the time. I really wish we can grieve more together but it is quite hard and depressing to bring up the subject. There are good days when I feel fine and that life is improving, but also days that I feel so down and question the meaning of life. I wonder if life would ever get better again. Right now I am still in denial I think of dad's passing. I wish that he would come back in spirit and talk to me in my dreams, or show some signs that he is still around or leave me with a message that he has gone to a better place - but I didn't hear from him. I know this all sounded weird but it is simply too difficult to accept that he is gone. How could someone who was here one day and the next day just gone forever? I simply can't let this go.
Also, I feel so insecured and anxious that death is just waiting for me and mom anytime. My dad was 66 and I had thought he would have years ahead of him. So, I feel that maybe mom and I would die any time from any illness or a freak accident. I don't want to live like this, as if I have lost the confidence to live. I'd like everything to be fine again that's why I have joined this group. It is encourage to read others' stories and know that others who have gone through similar events are experiencing very similar emotions.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

I was very busy getting dad's estate taken care of, so I had that to occupy my thoughts and keep me busy. I guess that I did not really feel like he was finally gone until we scattered dad's (and mom's) ashes at sea just over a year after dad passed.
I still have some things to do relative to their estate. A couple of final bills and things, but I drag it out. I guess I can feel like he is not really gone until I do this.
Holidays are hard, as are special days like their birthdays and anniversary. And major events here with my remaining family, knowing that dad will not be here to share them.
My wife lost her father about 30 years ago. She still misses him, and to an extend is still angry at the neighbor who found him slumped over in his car without doing something to save him. (Odds are that nothing could have been done, but post passing anger is a devil all of its own to deal with. Sometimes we need somebody to be angry at, especially if they are not an active part of our life.)
You will experience MANY different emotions; often you will get hit with them again and again. We just learn to deal with them.
I think the biggest thing is to accept that they are gone and we will not see them again. Unless you believe in an after life, but even that requires us to die first.
Gentle hugs, keep venting and find others (like us here!) to talk to. Keep a presence in your mom' life, at some point she will be ready to talk about it.
Please feel free to message me if you ever need someone to talk to. I feel like we would definitely understand each other. And of course, I'm so sorry that you lost him in such a horrible way. It really isn't fair. I truly share this pain with you.
It really is a terrible shock to the system and it does have you questioning so many other things as you have stated
If you have a faith this is the time to turn to it not away from it as it can help
Bereavement groups can also be a great source of support
It takes time to grieve and heal from the grief... It will get easier over time and I know that it's hard to see that right now.....
We never stop missing them .... I think of my parents or grandparents now and I can smile at precious memories and even laugh at things that made me laugh when they were here but I still miss them
Big hug for you and a blessing....xo
