He was able to maintain some level of activity throughout most of his illness. There was a lot he could no longer do, like yard work, so my husband and his brothers helped out.
When my FIL went down hill, it happened quickly. He spent his last few days in a hospital bed at their house. His last night was a horrible one. My husband was there, helping his mom care for Dad, and my poor FIL had such intense pain that the morphine barely took the edge off. The next day, my husband asked me to pick up a few things from the pharmacy. When I brought them over to the house, a hospice nurse was at the house helping make arrangements to move my FIL to the hospice facility. I saw my FIL for the last time. He looked awful...not at all like the man I had known. I said a prayer and whispered, "I love you," to him. I wasn't back home for 20 minutes when my husband called to say that his dad had died.
The news brought me a sense of relief, knowing that my FIL was no longer suffering, but I also felt a huge wave of sadness. I wasn't super close to my FIL, but he was someone I respected and he was my husband's father and beloved grandpa to my kids. It has been a little more than 2 years now since he died and I still think of him often. It was horrible watching him slowly wither away.
