I believe animals can 'see' the dead, or at least detect their spirits. While I do not have much experience with cats (I have always had dogs, so I have only had two cats my entire life), I have no doubts they experience grief and loss when a loved one dies. There are several movies depicting the devotion of pets to the owners. They often look like we do after a loss, especially walking around in a daze and loss of appetite. This advice may sound crazy, but the next time this happens, try talking to Brad. He could be visiting to make sure everything is going well. There is nothing to lose and you may be able to gain a new sense of peace.
Don't think of Brad as dead. Think of him as a transient being who drops in for a visit to hang out every now and then. It's nothing to be afraid of. It's natural.
