I wrote this poem in my son's memory too.
How does a dad write a poem
About the death of his son
How does he express how he feels inside
Now that this void has begun
Thirty seven years of memories
And three children left behind
Lives that are forever shattered
We strive to have peace of mind
To remember the fun times together
The memory of his smile
When hard times came, we'd sit and talk
And maybe cry for a while
We as humans don't understand
The hardships we face in life
Consequences that come from choices
we make
Cause is guilt, sorrow and strife
Sometimes, these last a lifetime
The hurt and the pain lies deep
Death causes these to surface again
Like promises we didn't keep
Sometimes life looks like a Magic Slate
No marks, no lines, it looks clean
But, if you fold the pages back
The marks and true lines can be seen
They are a lasting record
Once written on the front page
Like memories that are etched within our
minds
As through this life we age
I can't turn back the pages
In life's book forty years ago
When I was just a young man
There's so much I didn't know
I know Mike was a lot like me
Both are lives were sometimes a mess
The battles we fought, the struggles we
had
Only we understood I guess
I know my son wasn't perfect
At times, he was as wrong as could be
But, he was my son, and I loved him so
Just like I know. God loves me
So, I trust in my Heavenly Father
Even though I don't understand
All is placed for His safekeeping
In God's unchanging hand.

Just thought I would join this group now that I am a widower. My wife passed away May 28th. She was "The Wind Beneath My Wings". When I met her, I was a drunken, dope smoking, fighting, hell raising biker. She told me if I could get rid of the inner storm within me, that I could be a blessing to people. God placed her in my path to stop me. I have been drug and alcohol free now for 53...

My husband and I got our foster license last month, after 3 years of hard work (we had to start over multiple times due to family dramas and Mom's open heart surgery). We spent a year preparing the whole house, guest rooms, and children's bathroom for older kids of 7 yr old and up. Then we got a call that we have been approved to receive twin newborn premies. What, what?!! Babies!? Premies?!...

I am very touched by your beautiful poem.
Thank you very much for sharing it.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. You obviously loved Mike very deeply and naturally you're hurting. I'm so sorry for his loss. Parents aren't supposed to outlive their children. But remember that Mike is with you ~ and perhaps you feel him near you at times. God bless you and you are in my prayers. Peace, Lee
