Bedwetting (or nocturnal enuresis or sleepwetting) is involuntary urination while asleep. It is the normal state of affairs in infancy, but can be a source of embarrassment when it persists into school age or the teen or adult years. At age 13 I moved from Junior to Senior boarding-school. First night I got my dormitory number [3] and bed number [14]. I found my bed in the 24-bed dorm. Each bed had a set of pajamas laid out ready. Mine had two extra items - a large white rubber sheet and a pair of white rubber pants. I went red! The boy in the next bed smiled and said: "Self-service around here! - I'll give you a hand." Together this new-found friend and I made up the bed with the rubber sheet on the mattress. Then I changed into the pajamas, pulled the rubber pants on "all the way up" as Mum used to say, and climbed into bed. Staff would be glad I had "taken ownership" of my problem. But now 24 boys knew I was a bedwetter. Next day the whole school would know that: "Nico is a bedwetter!" They laughed to see my sheets, Pjs and rubber pants hanging out to dry - day after day.
