Hi all,

OK i came here because i am a bed wetter, however my reasons for my bed wetting are serious, and i have just spent 40 minutes reading some of the posts on this forum..

I am shocked at the number of people who are diapering their children, even though the children do not want this..

Let me make something clear.. "If you diaper a child when they do not want to be diapered, it becomes a punishment." even if your intentions are good..

Now you may ask why i have such a problem with such tactics, and believe me i do. my bed wetting problem (Its not actually a bed wetting problem but something else which is more serious) stems from this exact situation. Being forced into diapers when i did not want to be at the age of 8.

please be aware, this is not a very nice story. But it goes to show what forcing a child to wear a diaper can do.

Do not get me wrong, if your child is happily willing to wear the diaper, without any fuss, then it is perfectly fine,

I have just read a post of a lady whose 7 year old daughter started wetting the bed, this happened after she was put into a baby diaper, because she had an accident.. Now the mother is wondering why? Maybe because she was put into the diaper in the first place!!!

im sorry but i really hate it when people do this. children are very sensitive and these sort of things can really cause them problems in later life.

I would also like to point out the following, More of a suggestion than anything else..

One of the biggest reasons children do not want to wear diapers, is because from a young age everyone is taught diapers are for Babies..

If you are talking to your child DO NOT use the word diaper/nappy instead use brief, or protection..

one of the main reasons your child will not want to wear protection is because you call it a diaper/nappy. these are for babies...

You're right! Children should not be forced to wear diapers. It develops a bad habit, which leads to bedwetting by the time they become teenagers.

This is what Im struggling with with my kids, They have accidents and are very resistent to diapers. but they also wont take care of laundry or clean up their sheets etc if they do. i dont want to force the diapers but dont know what else to do

I was a bed wetter as a child and wished I had been diapered / nappied or what ever. I'd even willingly strip my bed and put them in the laundry rather than getting the belting that went onto beatings as I grew older than the dribble some of you speak about. It is more damaging for the child to wake up in a Cold wet bed every morning and a parent letting it happen. How about one asks the child what they want to try with your help ? If they choose to go diaper free they must sleep on a kylie, or peepod mat and be responsible for stripping their wet bed in the morning and placing their wet Bedding+ pj's in the laundry. If they don't comply (give them a few chances) then they go into pull ups or diapers.

I was a constant bed wetter as a child. Had some dry periods but always ended up back in diapers for it. But I have to be honest, as much as I did not like being diapered I knew that it was for good reasons. Waking up at 2am with wet sheets and pajamas was depriving me of sleep and always had difficulty focusing in school because of it. When I was diapered regularly I had full nights sleep and didn't have to wake up to wet pajamas, just a wet diaper. And I started feeling more secure and less anxious about waking up after another accident. So ya, being forced to be diapered isn't great, but it gets done for a reason. And even though I am still in diapers today, I don't blame my mother for making me this way. And I am happy that I was in diapers as a kid.

I think a lot has to do with how it is approached as well as the child. I too was put back in diapers at age 8 for bed wetting, and remained in them until I was 14, and still occasionally after that. A wet diaper is always better than a wet bed. While I resented it to say the least at night, I understood the reason and eventually came to terms with the situation. Mom came from a physically and emotionally abusive home so her harsh treatment really just reflected her tough upbringing. Diapers became not only a means of dealing with the situation, but quickly became a means of punishment for misbehavior and bad grades. We have a very good relationship now as she has mellowed with age and wisdom, but the past is best left there and I could never feel comfortable discussing this with her. A little more support and love back then would probably have greatly alleviated my feelings of inadequacy caused by the situation and the diapers.

I don't like wearing diapers and as stubborn as i was i went 2 months cleaning my sheets every day. No you shoudn't force a kid in diapers and it shouldn't be a punishment. But when it becomes such a problem when every night and morning is such a hassle. You have to take measure for the just in case.

You can't just having a kid saying no i don't wanna wear diapers and waking up soked and miserable every day. Sometimes you need to have them wear them in order to prevent such stress and pain that it causes. It should be approach in a loving and caring way and should never be used as punishment and should never be use to embarrass the child.

It also isn't a cure all though for some it may be the only solution. It should only be use as a preventive measure to encourage growth not back peddling. It should be both the parent and child goal to have more dry than wet nights.

For me however i don't feel mine are preventive measures anymore. After being told that mine is caused it stress and aniety. An the fact that i suffer from narcolepsy. I still try so hard to stay dry but it something not everyone is going to be able to do and i understand that but it won't stop me from trying :3

Like Rosa, I was also stubborn cleaning sheets and until last September resisted nappies but have resigned to wearing them each night now. But as a child I was wearing a nappy to bed every night due to bed wetting. I didn't want to wear them but my parents were very supportive in explaining why I needed them and that it wasn't my fault. As much as I didn't like it, I did accept it. I'm slowly starting to accept then again now, but again like Rosa, I still hope to be dry again one day.
