The implanted pain pump or intrathecal pump is installed after all kind of medications have been tried with the patient and if they are still in chronic pain and nothing else works (morphine, oxycontyn, methadone, etc.) then the pain management doctor will suggest an intrathecal pain pump, but not before that.
