I am going for surgery in 2 days DR. want me to wear back brace for few weeks this brace coast $1000 i have to pay 40% of it as to much for me ,,i just wonder if any one have to use a back brace after this surgery?? ..... his nurse told me the back brace will left my upper body up so it keep my weight from my back !!!! I've had the surgery 2 times. I had to wear the brace with each surgeries. I had to have it because I broke my back caring for my father. He became deaf, legally blind and a double aumptee. I brought him home and I had him home for 10 months. I tripped over his Lift. I also have DDD. I could feel the bolts in my back. I waited as long as I could to have it removed. Due to me having DDD, the disk above the fusion at S-1 to L-4 and L-5 were crumbling. I did get to use the same brace. I hated the brace. But you have to wear it. So you don't move wrong. At least they are letting you get use to it. My surgeon didn't. I still can feel the hardware with the new fusion. I'm a small person. My Father N Law of 22 years pasted away the day before my surgery. I went into it with a broken heart. Three weeks after my surgery at the age of 43 I suffered a massive heart attack. Both my parents have heart disease and had quad heart by passes.If your family have heart conditions, I would get a strees test before your surgery. I wish you the best of LUCK. Yeah.... Unfortunately the brace must be used if you are having a fusion, it just the way it goes. I had to use mine which it was customed made for 8 weeks post-op, and it really helped me.
It also helps you to keep your posture and for you not to do any BLT (bending, lifting or twisting), while you are healing.
Just know that whatever time you have to use it is for you benefit. Good luck with surgery!
I loved my brace, and I still use mine when my back really hurts, which for me is pretty much all the time.
