My fiance and i are expecting our first child in May, and i have been worrying about her health. Kris was diagnosed as severely autistic when he was 2, but is high functioning now (at 19) and we are worried about our daughter being the same. Not that we would love her any less of course, we are just worrying. he has a family history of autism as do i. i also have ms in my family. Any advice would be greatly apresiated

I can relate to some degree. My daughter is PDD-NOS and pretty high functioning. We went to specialists (sent by our family doctor) in several major cities. Even went to Children's hospital in Denver to a pediatric neurologist. No one ever told us she had a type of autism. She wasn't officially diagnosed until 5. We got pregnant unexpectedly when our daughter was 3. I had some of the same fears you do. My delivery was also complicated by my diabetes and my daughter almost died at birth because of it (sugar level hit 17, they had tried to put an IV in the stump cord twice and failed...they were going to try one more time and then let her go...thank God that one took). So, I was on birthcontrol to prevent pregnancy. Imagine my anguish when I found out that some antibiotics had cancelled out my pill. I knew it could happen but didn't take it seriously. Long story short, my son's birth went off fairly well...only hit the 40s on sugar level for a very brief period and the IV stump cord took the first time. He is a normal (albeit ornery) 3 1/2 year old boy. I know it is hard, but sometimes the best thing you can do is pray and give it up to God. It is VERY hard, but it will give you some peace. You don't need any more stress than what a pregnancy already brings. **HUGS** Praying for a healthy pregnancy, delivery, and baby.

I guess you have been getting your prenatal vitamins? I hear that failure to get them can be a risk factor.

My mom didn't know she was pregnant with me for a few months, and I didn't know I was pregnant with my youngest daughter until about 3 months along, either. She showed the most signs of autism of any of my 4 children, but none have been diagnosed.

I think I have autism, but have never been diagnosed. I also hear there are advantages to autism.
