Good on you, you sound like my hubby. He would do absolutly anything for J, he attends therapy and meetings with me, takes the kids for outside play so i can have a rest, heck he even changes diapers. I wish there were more men like that.
So i applaud you for being supportive of your wife and clearly a great father.

well, i wish hubby would read this. problem is he is still in denial i guess, thinks he gave adam autism, oh, and will say that adam has the mind of a 3 yr old. makes me so made he has never taken the time to understand autism or adam. adam has the fine motor skills of a 3 yr old, the speech sounds like 3 yr old or younger due to apraxia and no one getting him the ei he needed, the skills of a 3 or 4 yr old, academically he scores 5 to 6 1/2 yrs old, but he has a mind right where it should be, a 6 yr old going on 7! he has autism and has some difficulties, but like you said, he knows, HE KNOWS, that not only did mom walk out, dad wont accept him for who he is, he knows. I wonder why is it some men are like that, but lets face it, there are women like that too, how many women are here raising another womans child because the child has autism and biomom walked out? sad isnt it? and that just counts the ones that know about this site...the low number of dad members here scare me, i figure if they are not getting support then they are probably one of the people that think if they ignore it, it will go away. not all das, but alot of them, once again, for you dads that are there every step of the way, i am so very proud of you and especially happy for your kids, they are the ones that are reaping the benefits of having both parents involved in their progress and the more people involved, the better the progress!

kudos to you and how lucky for your wife. I think it's really individual, like most things...but I think men in general, have a hard time accepting things they have no power over. It's also easy to ignore something, especially when you know someone else will deal with it. That's how it is in our home. My husband KNOWS that I will take care of everything with or without him, because it needs to happen. He knows he can ignore, procrastinate and just separate himself from everything going on, because as a mother...it is in my nature. It's more work for him on so many levels and it's easier to just not do it.

In my case, my husband also has High Functioning Autism as does our older daughter. My husband is extremely intelligent and has thoroughly researched all topics he can find related to Autism spectrum disorders and possible causes. So, I know that he is very interested in understanding and helping. However, I don't think that he knows how to help...and I'm too busy to tell him. And, we communicate in very different ways too. Probably our biggest hurdle is communication. But, in his defense, he does go to all of her IEP meetings. He just doesn't do the "daily grind" like feeding, bathing, clothing, getting her ready for school, putting her to bed, putting up with her tantrums, child-proofing the house... You know, the daily junk that needs to be done, but isn't much fun.

I have to apologize for my rant last night that resulted in this discussion topic. Earlier in the evening, my wife and I had gone over all the test results with the doctor, and I was having all the overwhelming feelings again. My head wasn't really working to well when I posted this, so again, I have to apologize to anybody who may have taken offense to it. And thank you to everybody who's been understanding.

Good for you. My husband too is wonderful with my teen with Autism. Stand up for the Men! Good luck with your son.

jordan: please do not apologize, what you said came from your heart and like i said before, i wish all dads would get some kind of support and get more involved, heck i dont care if they do it out in the barn drinking PBR as long as they are getting the support they need to help the kids! i dont think you offended a single person with your post, i think it is a good post, a needed post, thank you!

Kudos to you! I am happy to say that my fiancee, who is not my son's biological father, does everything in his power to help him, and me. I am truly blessed.
