Autism / Autism Spectrum Support Group
Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.

I took my three-year-old to a pediatrician, and to my bewilderment, instead of examining Tony, the doctor kept asking me personal questions - as though I were the patient. I had never heard of autism in 1961, and Freuds formulas were not as well known as they are today. Bruno Bettelheim was the author of a theory that maternal rejection causes autism. Few people take either Freud or Bettelheim seriously any more. Nevertheless Ive written an entertaining account of our experience, which I invite you to read at:

Scientific orthodoxy is hard to fight, and I suspect the psychiatric profession would have continued to psychoanalyze mothers of autistic children if we hadnt rebelled. However, I have since become interested in another controversy, the debate over philosophical materialism. Is the universe a mechanical device, and living organisms are merely complex meat puppets? Or do volition, free-will, purposeful creativity and intelligent choice play major roles in the organization of the universe? To my story about our autistic son, I have added questions to the beginning of each chapter, such as, Does belief in an immaterial soul require belief in a personal god? What is intelligence? and Does free will exit? Is theism the only alternative to materialism? These are questions we are all entitled to ponder and there is no reason to believe materialistic answers are confirmed truth.
However if you arent interested in philosophical questions its still an interesting story about one autistic boy.

I went to the doctor a while ago to see about my allergies. He rubbed my arm and stuck things under the skin. Nothing. He poked and prodded, his phlebotomist drew so much blood people thought that we were dating. The tests all came back negative. Then one day I went back and I told him that I had found the cause of my allergy. It turns out, I am allergic to betrayal.
