eyah, that is a weird and inappropriate response...i would have said something...you don't want him to regress because of her scoldings.

emotions are a good thing....and our kids are capable of having and showing them.
Perhaps the teacher was having a bad day????

Hi I work in a special ed school. I feel the teacher was abrupt, but slightly right in what she meant.
Children with Autism as you are aware do not display or feel emotions the way we do. Children can display crying/screaming/shouting/banging/hitting etc all types of behaviours to get what they want.
With transition the child has to accept the activity is finished, then move on to the next activity.
This explanation no means explains why she said what she said in the way she said it, but she could of put it better! Much better!
She should of said "painting finished" "crying finished" there well done, now wipe your nose, well done thats a good boy. Next we are going to do...........................................................................

I agree with Claire sometimes my son will cry and we don't always knnow why! They use alot of sensory things and that helps him alot.

although what claire said was well said i disagree, i dont think the teacher should baby our children, BUT, i think they should aknowledge our children have feelings too. would you say that to a child that did not have autism? no, she would of consoled the child for a second and explained it was ok to be upset but it is now time to move on to the next task. our children MUST be treated like their peers, there is no compromise when it comes to showing emotions, especially when you see it is a "true" emotion, true sadness, true happiness, true frustration, meaning there is an exact reason for the emotion.

Well, I agree that the teacher should not have said quite your crying. Really a picture exchange should have been in place so that your son could have seen what was expected of him next. Let him know that this has come to an end but we are going to do __________ next. I also console my boys when they are upset about something coming to an end. I usually tell them that I understand why they are upset. I would have said, " I know it is hard to stop painting but we are going to do this next". Emotions are a good thing. Hugs Denise

ya know Jordan....I've been sitting on this one..so to speak~ ..started thinking back....when Alex HAD NO EMOTIONS......or....the emotion didn't fit...make sense.....like...laughing....when nothing was even funny? vice-versa.....started thinking back...way back..lol..mines nearly 15 years old! I cannot tell ya...how many mirrors we went through! I mean it was daily...and it was the hardest thing to do! I use to wonder if he'd ever put an emotion with a word.....and both be at the appropriate time......HE DID! I am upset with the words the teacher chose...she should've been more considerate...and being that she is well AWARE OF TRANSITIONAL ISSUES....YA'D THINK....SHE'D OF WORDED IT BETTER! I think as hard as our kiddo's have to work for emotions.....they ought to be able to express them! I am sorry ya had this happen....and it lets ya know.....how this teacher is....when ya are not around....and maybe..she's even more insensitive then..keep your eyes and ears open....see if he starts refusing too go to school...dislikes...etc..hugs to ya hun!

very good advice years i didnt even think about that, adam went through that last yr, didnt want to go to school, not like him, til i went and spent a couple of hrs at school and what i saw sent me out in tears, the teacher was a royal bitch and had it in her head she would get the autism out of adam if it was the last thing she did, good luck with that! watch him, you see changes that cant be explained you can rest assured she is not nuturing him, she is torturing him, with words and actions. adams old teacher tortured him with what was suppose to me a transitional warning, i used an egg timer at home, it worked at home, i told her to try it at school, instead she used the egg timer as the timer for time out chair, she placed it right beside his ear, knowing his sensitivity to sudden sounds. i was there one day, she put him in time out with the egg timer, he was a mess, the tick, tick, tick, had him ready for a meltdown and when the timer finally went off he screamed. i went and told his dad if he cared one bit about the way his child is being treated at school he would go there right then and have a very serious talk with the teacher, of course he didnt, but by the time i was done with the school they were not worried about dad, they were worried about me :) but like yrs said, u see changes in how he feels about school then something at school is wrong and do not hesitate to call meeting to get it straightened out, you are your sons voice and so far you have spoken loud and clear, dont stop now!

Well I have extensive experience with my own children whom have BOTH refused to attend school, but my son whom has ASD became suicidal last year because of what he was experiencing at school. He stopped eating, sleeping, going out etc.
He developed nervous ticks, to the extent that the Child Padiatrician thought it was tourettes as he showed more than 5 tics. I still agree with my first comment previously and although I appreciate that other people are entitled to disagree I am also entitled to my own opion.
I didnt agree with what the teacher had said at all, also I pointed out the way she said what she said was incorrect also.
Jordanc I hope you did not feel I was submissive of how you felt for your son, thats the last thing I would want. I was just trying to see why the teacher gave that response.!

I think it was great that he was showing his emotions, and they should always be acknowledged. At that moment, that was his way of communicating. It wouldn't be unusual for a typical child to cry at a time like this. On several occassions, I have experienced this attitude from trained professionals. It's almost like they expect children with autism to behave better than typical children. Sometimes our children are just being preschoolers. My son also has problems with transitions, especially at school. One day I came to pick him up, and as I was approaching the door of the classroom, I saw a substitute teacher grab him by the arms, shake him, and say "Did you hear what I just said?" Apparently, Casen was trying to go out the door because they had lined up to go to the restroom, which is a terrible transition time for him. She scared him to death, and he started screaming and running down the hall. Of course, I freaked and she will never be back, but now I observe every chance I get. I also made sure to be very, very specific in his IEP about how I wanted him to be treated, and how I wanted his learning to be spontaneous and not rote. I have also witnessed another teacher treating someone elses child unfairly and I reported it to the principle and board of education. I don't like to be that way, but when it comes to our children, I feel like it's my responsibility. I would definitely let the teacher know how you feel about her response and let her know how you want her to deal with these situations. Every child is different, and what works for you at home should be reinforced at school.

casesnmom, it is all of our responsibilities to report anyone for mistreating any child, bravo to you! i am the most hated person that goes to my mothers nurisng home, why? because i have no problem pointing out what i see as neglect or possible abuse and they dont like that but cant do a thing about it because the law states that if you see someone that is not able to speak up for themselves for whatever reason, disability, fear of retaliation, whatever, you are obligated by law to report the incident to the proper authorities and if you believe it is a criminal offense you are suppose to call the police, if it turns out its not criminal, no harm no foul, you are not held liable for slander or any such mess like that, it is called protecting people that can not protect themselves. bravo to you!
