Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.
Ever since my "bad day" where I was taking out my fatigue-induced frustrations on Harrison, I made a vow never to do it again. Now, I try to do something special with him every day. Even if it's only 20-30 minutes, I still do it. I want to create memories with him, and I also want him to see that he still is very important and very loved even thought his little brother requires so much attention right now. And something good and funny has always came from it.
Today, there was a 10% off sale at the local health market (located in the grocery store), so I went to stock up on stuff for Harrison. The shopping carts are actually a little fire engine with a shopping cart attached. They don't turn worth a darn, but Harrison loves it. I was in the frozen section when Harrison figured out how to unattach the clasp that kept him secured in. He jumped out the "passenger side" and ran around to the "driver side" and got back in, just like a "Chinese fire drill" from the 50s. He kept doing this, and I just had to laugh (as did everybody else in the health market). When he was done with this, I saw two little feet sticking out from the front window. I looked to see that he was kicked back and had his feet propped up. Every time I went to get something for him, I got two options and let him choose, and he seemed to like being able to pick. When we got to the checkout lane, he started the "Chinese fire drills" again (maybe he was resting for awhile). I found the skinniest checkout lane, and he had no room to get out on either side. I thought he was contained while I was paying. But then I saw his little head sticking out from the front of the fire truck, and with a big smile on his face, he climbed out the front and said, "out of the fire truck". The employees were all laughing, and it was one of those moments where my love for him found new places in my heart.

caleb loves them. we're able to shop for longer when those carts are available because caleb loves to go for rides in them!
