I am getting ready to go on a 4 hour drive this weekend. We don't know how our 4 year old will act this trip since he may have autism. We will be driving at night the on the way up there and then in the afternoon on the way back. I was wondering what are some tips for traveling with a 4 year old that may have autism?

favorite toys or books, snacks that he likes. if he has a favorite blanket, take it. these will not only help in the car but also in visiting as anxiety may come into play when in unfamiliar surroundings. if you are visiting family, set up someplace he can go if he gets overwhelmed.

my son is 16 now. back then , my husband rigged an old 13 inch tv with vcr combo and he watched movies but if you have a kindle or tablet that has the capability of him watching something, that could be an option.

most of all, frequent breaks on the trip back.

he did good for the most part. on the way up he slept most of the way. then on the way back he fell asleep for a while but then we hit traffic and he woke up and was getting tot he point of not wanting to be in the car anymore and I didn't blame him. he played with the IPOD and his inno tab most of the time.
