Question about SSI

I have a 10 year old son on SSI. He's on the spectrum. If I were to get married would I lose his SSI? I've tried calling social security but you wait on hold forever. Thanks.

Hello mommy24inGa, I looked on the web and counted 32 Soc. Sec. Office locations in Georgia. My advice (if feasible) would be to go to the nearest one and talk to the clerk about your situation. I think there's also "higher-ups" there do discuss things with more privately. Bring documentation about your son's SSI coverage in case they need it. They're very helpful. Also, go early to avoid a long wait.

Of course you would have to ask them about your exact situation, but ...

SSI is based partly on your child's disability and partly on family income / resources. So, If getting married changes your family income/resources then your child's eligibility for SSI could change. It's NOT an automatic change based the status of getting or being married, but a possible change based on income / resource changes that sometimes go along with that.

If they are survivor benefits, and he is receiving them and you are just his appointed money manager, then no. One of my sons receives survivor benefits, and I have remarried, and they were not affected. However, I do not - and have not - received any survivor benefirts myself. I manage his and use his to provide for him, not myself.

If you are receiving an additional benefit in your name only, then you probably would lose it, but you should check with Social Security about that. The rules about remarriage have changed in the last couple of years.
