I am not sure but that doesnt sound right to me. If it were me I think the first thing I would do is get his Dr. to send them a letter stating that he needs it, I am sure after others with more experience read this you will get better advise.

Was he officially "evaluated"? If he was and you had and IEP meeting with the staff and they say he does not qualify for OT then you have the right to rebut that by having him re-evaluated by someone that both you and the school district agree upon according to law. This is whenever you disagree with what they say while doing the IEP. You don't have to sign it. A great resource is www.wrightslaw.com for advocating for your child. An IEP gets looked at every year but, is re-evaluated every three years if you have one in place. However, if you are have a problem with it, you can always have it redressed at any time. Also, remember to that it is wise to keep any communications in writing as this provides a written trail for you. Also, return receipt mail is a good choice, therefore you can never get the excuse that they never received it and you have a signature of who signed for it.

Oh, but I should also add, that yes...as Priscila stated, you should probably have something from your doctor I would imagine. Then probably proceed, it's up to you about rocking the boat and so forth.

Another thought is that if you feel the need to, you can hire an advocate to do this for you.

I found that OT in school is very different than the OT out of school. If the skills needed are not going to help him specifically with school needs such as holding a pencil or cutting etc....they do not see it as a need in the school setting. My son has OT needs but does not qualify under the school setting even though he recieved them in pre-k. He is being reevaluated because he is very slow and meticulous in his writing, which could be a lack of control and then it would be a school related issue. I was told that school OT is very hard to get.

I had the same problem, I got several letters from my son's doctor, his OT outside of the school and a team of specialist that had diagnosed my son autistic, and also some help from my son's Disability casemanager then I took all my research and letter and requested a due process hearing. You do have to do the work I have learned that the schools don't always put the childs needs first.
