If he is older than pre school, he may need placement outside general ed. What things are they getting? The issue is how they are using the materials. It is possible to missuse the sensory items and infact reinforce bad behavior.
The best thing to do is stay ontop of the school abd DOCUMENT ALL CONVERSATIOSN AND REQUESTS IN WRITING AND EMAIL.
Many times the school will not know what to do, and they are required by law to offer APPROPRIATE education. He sounds like a one on one AIDE is appropriate, especially if he has the IQ or educational potential. Either way he deserves to hae the opportunity to go to school like everyone else has, even if that means he needs specifically trained teachers to facilitate that.

From the sounds of your question, they have hired someone to work one on one with him -you. Are you the teacher or the aide? Also what grade is he in and what is his intellectual functioning? Those are important questions to answer in order to help with recommendations. You also need to know exactly what his social, language, and sensory functioning looks like. The bottom line is that the school does not have to wait for a diagnosis. They are required to get the diagnhosis. They have 3 options. They can review an outside diagnosis and accept it, they can evaluate themselves, or they can pay or an outside diagnosis. They cannot provide special educaiton without a diagnosis and if they delay services while they wait on a diagnosis then they could be liable for compensatory education. No two kids with autism are exactly alike and having a quality report with a good proile of that individual child along with individualized recommendations is essential to providing good educational services. Ask them to read a copy of the report. Sounds like Ette a few years ago....We started by making a picture schedual....which took alot of training but is so worth it in the long run....make a general schedual and have him check it multiple times through out the day....we also had a picture of the next activity at its location...he would match the two pictures together and then get started....it took a while a few weeks....but has really helped....and now this is how he gets his work done.....they set up a desk in the back of class where he does his work so he can concentrate without distractions....next to the desk is a plastic set of drawers.....that hold an activity in each and in the bottom is his reward....usually a sticker or candy......he has a schedual on his desk....he peals off the sticker and puts in on the right drawer and then pulls out the activity....when its done it goes in a box on the other side of the desk....and when he is done he gets his reward and 5 minutes of free time....he usually crawls under a table to enjoy his reward.....He also wears a velcro weighted vest....he loves it and it slows him down a bit....they also got a swing for him this year so if he gets really overstimulated he can jump in it for a few minutes.....its worked well so far.....I know they have a dark box...about 3 x3 cube thats painted black and a few of the other kiddos go inside for there calm down time....I think it has a few christmas lights that twinkle from the ceiling...there really dim though...
Ette also chews so we got chewy tubes....there are no holes so there is nowhere for the spit to collect....and after a few months of modeling appropriate touching he stays mostly in his own space...although away from blonde girls....he just cant resist them...They have special mats they sit on and his is shaped like a dinosaur...his favorite...so he can find it...he has dinosaurs on all of his stuff....chair, locker, folders....to help him identify HIS stuff and space...

Hi am am a mother with a six yr old with Asperger's and a 2yr old with autism. My question for you is, are you a trained teacher in autism? For example ABA or a develpomental therapist for autism. I get the best services for my sons with both, that have been taught the correct way to teach then and myself. Like Olismom said you could end up really reinforcing the bad behaviors instead of good which will prolong any real skill learning. My youngest son does all of those same things. I would recommend a chewy tube for sensory chewing. I put my sons on a brake away necklace and have conditioned it so that he is now comfortable wearing it, he has really bad pica so he puts everything in his mouth. I think its great that he is going to have one on one in school. Also online you can find free pecs pictures to use if verbal comunication is an issue. Also sign language. Good Luck!
