I am not in your same state, but I would try not to worry. As part of the guardianship process they have to show that you are a vulnerable person who needs the protection of a guardian. Then they have to show that they are the best person to be your guardian. And, even if all that happens then they still have to allow you as much freedom and self-determination as practical while still providing the protection of a guardian. And have to make annual written reports to the court about what they are using the guardianship to do for you.

The court will not make you have a guardian if you don't need one. So, try not to worry.

I have a different situation than you. I'm the parent of a newly adult child ( he just turned 18). His doctor, his teacher, and his county dd caseworker all agree that I need guardianship. But I can't get it because I can't afford to pay a full priced attorney for it and none of the lower cost legal services will help me. He lost some services that he likes and learns/develops from when he turned 18 because he does not understand well enough to sign their required documents.

Guardianship is designed for situations like mine and my son's. If you are independently holding down a real job without a job coach and studying at college in classes you have a realistic ability to pass, that are not just recreational classes, then you probably don't need a guardian UNLESS you are having substantial difficulty managing your own finances, your own medical care, aren't able to live independently for reasons other than a lack of money. The courts are pretty knowledgeable about these things and will not appoint a guardian for someone who doesn't need one. Also,there are different levels of guardianship - from "limited" with whatever restrictions the court decides, to "full" which means what it sounds like.

So, I can tell from your statement that you feel that you don't need a guardian. I hope you are right. But don't be afraid of the process. There are protections built into the system so that people who don't need guardians don't get them.

I had to quit a job because I worked for a supervisor who knew I was autistic and wanted to make me normal "for my own good." He tried to micromanage my private life, requiring me to lose much of my take-home pay from the cost of renting an overpriced apartment and running personal errands for him as a condition for renewing my teaching contract every academic year. He thought it was part of my "disease" to live in a house normal people think looks "too weird" and wanted me to lose my house to relocate and live in the overpriced apartment the rest of my life and he wanted me to get rid of the ability of students to find my living in this unusual but architectural masterpiece of a house on the internet for the sake of my "professional image." He was trying to take a form of guardianship of me which he pretended was for my own good to make me more successful and to get along better with a culture I cannot respect.
Let us suppose I needed to submit to someone else deciding for me how I should live because it is necessary for me to survive. I demand my right to say no because the life a well meaning guardian claiming to dominate me "out of love" has to offer is a life I could never find worth living and I would be willing to get myself killed fighting back against it.
If society's self-esteem is insulted because I find the culture and way of life it wants to shove down my throat is a life I refuse to accept and I would rather be dead than conform thereto, I must tell the world, tough shit. I want to make my own decisions.
