Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.
Anyone here have a child with PDD (pervasive developmental disorder)? My daughter has sensory processing disorder and I'm suspecting PDD. Any information on it (ie behaviors, symptoms, stories about your kids that have it, therapies, other treatments, how it is diagnosed and by whom etc) would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

Since PDD is such a broad subject, you might have more success snooping into all the 'related links' webmd offers on that page. Keep in mind that the Autism Spectrum is really a large collection of various symptoms, grouped into "disorders". If one disorder has a symptom common to another, it may be linked to that other disorder's unique symptoms. Many on the Autie or Aspie Boards have more than just the one disorder.

Oli is 8 now. When he was 2 I referred myself to early child intervention because he was not talking and the symptoms were getting worse, especially the headbanging and tantrums. The initial intake concluded a definite delay, and the evaluation was just concerned about him getting ECI . He was having no eye contact, wringing his hands( flapping) and really hyper jumping all over the furniture. She saw him for just a moment and was certain he had "sensory issues" Over the next year he got help twice a week, but by the time he was 34 months he was not willing to attend the church Mothers day out. The school district Dx PDD-NOS at age 3.
He was a perfect baby, until after the 12 month vaccines. I take a risk to state that, because there are a few VERY VOCAL people who will cast judgement on that, because some people think their kids are that way from birth. We all all correct, just because your kid is this way or that is not a reason for EVERY kid to only be like your kid. Oli is doing really well. He did not have support for the Dallas school for pre school. The Speech therapist there when he was 3 told me she did not think a kid with autism was supposed to learn to talk, and that I needed to accept that. Well, I Did NOT accept that, and enrolled him into a private pre school that specializes with special needs, and he was ready to go to mainstream K at age 5. At that pre school he had speech help 4 times a week, and he also had a teacher show him and his friends yoga to calm himself down.
We moved away from Dallas to the suburbs, especially to a school renowned for having a great staff. The K teacher was especially trained with ASD and he was accepted into an ABA program after school, which we still attend now for 2 and a half years. He also had some OT sessions,
We use no meds except Melatonin. I looked into Brain therapy with a doctor but it did not fit into our thing.
Also when Oli was 3 I got help from the county mental health dept for behavior. I was trained to help him, and it made all the difference.
Bit by bit it is all working out.
Maebeth, how old is you daughter?
Does she talk? Does she have obsessions or what are her behaviors like? Be VERY selective with the therapies because what works for one is not always what another needs. Any good therapist will tell you that.

My family and I just wanted to say THANK YOU!!!!! Thank you so much for introducing us to LIMU. Some people may not know why our thanks are so important. My son Lane is autistic. He was diagnosed at the age of four. We were blown away when we found out he had it. He had severe food allergies as a baby and we almost lost him because he was severely dehydrated due to not being able to keep food or liquids down for a long period of time. We battled the food allergies and got him situated with that only to find out two short years later that he was battling Autism. Our happy little world seemed very sad all of the sudden. We watched Lane over the years, have birthdays and Christmas where he would cry because he had to open his gifts instead of being happy about them. He did not play with other children, he preferred to play alone. He had severe temper tantrums and the shrillest cry you can imagine. He suffered from migraines and couldnt sleep. He was not very verbal until he was five. He would never look at you if you talked to him and you were lucky if you ever got an answer.
Today Lane loves to play with other children, he sleeps well, no more headaches, tantrums are rare, and he said this was the best Christmas he has ever had. He laughs often and plays a lot. He will carry on a conversation with most anyone. He smiles. Every morning when he gets up he asks for his LIMU and before he goes to bed he reminds me to give it to him. He says it makes him feel better and when I asked him what that meant he said I just dont feel those bad things anymore. I dont hurt. Now, I dont beg for hugs, he just offers them. For a mother who has waited 8 years to have her son express love to her, thats irreplaceable. I am glad that you have extended your knowledge of a great product to us and I will gladly pass it on.
