Autism / Autism Spectrum Support Group
Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.
Which biomedical treatments are you using? I'm alway open to hearing about which ones are working.
Tina, the biomedical treatment I generally speak of is called the DAN! (Defeat Autism Now) protocol. You can find information about it t www.autism.com. This is the Autism Research Institute's website. If you "google" DAN! doctors or Defeat Autism Now!, you should get tons of information. On www.autism.com, you can also find a link for a state-by-state directory of most doctors who follow this treatment protocol. The drawback about this for me is that since my insurance company still considers most tests and treatments "experimental", much of it isn't covered. Some of the specific things my son's doctor is treating include a yeast overgrowth in his gut, which is getting in the way of his body's natural ability to detox, which explains why he isn't dumping most toxins (mercury, specifically). He also has methylation issues, which is caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency, and this is getting in the way of proper neurotransmitter functioning. His immune system is also out of balance. This was caused by the toxins he can't properly detox, which attacked his immune system, along with the MMR vaccine, which he has a genetic susceptibility to. The antibiotics I had to use to get rid of the infection caused by his weakened immune system killed all the beneficial bacteria, which cased the yeast overgrowth. All systems are interrelated, and once you set something off, it starts a kind of chain reaction.
I hope I didn't confuse you too much. In a nutshell, the biomedical process treats autism from a biological point of view. I am still treating my son from a behavioral point of view because I believe that you can't do one (biomedical) without the other (behavioral) and expect optimal results. I am starting to see great improvements in my son, which is very motivating, considering all the time and money it has taken ths far. Please feel free to ask me any questions.
Just a hour consult was like $400.00...yikes
