Autism / Autism Spectrum Support Group
Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.
Is this the kind of thing that you could work around using successive approximations / desensitization? (You know the technique where you start out looking at a picture of her face, then look at her real shoulder, ... chin, ...mouth, ... nose, ...eyes - kind of like working your way up to it.)
This sounds like a difficulty situation. I hope you find your answer.
I have a type of autism and if it helps you you could explain it like this: Even though we often do not tend to look someone in the eyes we know sooo much more about that person, more than someone else who would make eye contact and still not know anything about that person.
Our senses, the senses of autistic people, are fine tuned instruments. I can identify the type of person someone is by the way they walk, the pitch of their voice, without ever looking at anyone directly. And yes, I do identify their thinking too.
You have additional senses that other people do not have and you use those senses without just using your eye sight. That's all.
Do not listen to anyone that attempts to tell you to work on yourself. You are as you are.
