Brushing

Does anyone here use brushing as therapy for their children? I met w/the O.T. today and we will start this for Isaac in 2 weeks re he's very touchy and almost wants to vomit if you touch him. I'm told at first he'll resist and it will make his skin red, it has to be done every 90 minutes, and had to be done or it's not effective like he can't miss a treatment, and also he will get use to it and this should help him to accept touch. So does anyone use this therapy or know anything else? Thanx...

I have used brushing and it will calm the nerves down. I dont do it every hour or two like I am suppose to. I havent done it consistantly to see the real results, but coming from our dear Kris (Herding123) it has helped her a lot. I always forget so dont be like me.

My son hated the brushing, it appeared to be to tickely. So we dont do it we opted for firm pressure therapy instead. But I have heard that alot of kids really benefit from brushing especially at bed time

My daughter loves it, we do it every two hours, it really calms her for a short period, but we also do massage therapy . At first with the brushing she wasnt too sure as she has sensory issues too, but now she loves it.

With my son what works is tons of hugs, tight tight hugs. Almost too tight, sometimes you can hear his back pop , or crack into place. He loves this. He also sits on us which I guess gives him back that deep pressure feedback (ugh heavy!) The tramoline and yoga ball. He bounces so high and so quickly to get the deep pressure. Sometimes the therapist rolls the ball on him while he lays on these foam mats . Brushing.... I think my son would look at me funny if I tried that.

I used brushing with my son for over two years and it did wounders- now we use a pressurevest which helps during school to assist with calming him and he loves it- i have them put it under his cloths and he wears it one hour on and one hour off--works great

My daughter wears the pressure vest too, she loves it, also wears a weighted vest, that works wonders,

eeeek i wouldnt dare use brushing for my child. he seems to have an aversion to it! a major aversion! I really hope tht it works for you though.

can someone tell me more about presure vests and weighted vests please? (oops sorry to go off topic, will start a new dscussion bout it)

There is also massage therapy, my daughter loves it, and looks forward to it.. just ask your ot..

I work at a preschool with children with learning disabilities and we do use this brushing technique. I have seen it work for many children and others only for short periods of time. I think to try anything is better than not to try it at all. We love for the parents to be involved and I am glad to see you looking for ideas.

    My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper?
