Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.

How long have you had Afib?

As I am at the beginning of this Afib journey, I am curious about its path. I know it is different for everyone and I am always amazed to read about someone having Afib for years and years. What age were you diagnosed? How long have you had Afib? Briefly, what was the progression like for you and if you are on blood thinners and/or had an ablation, how long after your original diagnosis? Thanks for all the support and input on this website. It is my "go to" place for worry control!

May 9th 2010 (Mother's Day). I was 50 at the time. Not overweight, 6' tall, no prior history, no smoking, no recreational drugs, eat responsibly/healthy and drink white wine (chardonnay) and rarely a few beers at get togethers. Outdoors as often as possible. ;)

A few more thoughts, as I/we "can't" edit our posts here on this high-tech DS site:

Although a very, very scary experience during my first AF episode in the ER and hospital. I must say that the people there were absolutely amazingly helpful and incredibly caring. Even though I attempted to escape at one point, I was humbled and extremely grateful for their services.

If I ever won the lottery this facility would be on my donor/gift list $$$$$$$$. ;)

41 years old when it started in July 2011, but not really diagnosed until Feb. 2012. It was a really rough year with lonnngg and severe episodes. I had an ablation on January 14 and I feel fabulous!
