Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Support Group
Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
Last and are a waste of money ! Take care and hope you stay in NSR

My heart rate the first 3 times reached a high of somewhere around 80 while at rest. I don''t know exactly because it varied so much and they all started when I was running. Those first 2 lasted between 15 and 28 hours. The third one lasted maybe 20 minutes. The fourth lasted about 4 or 5 hours and seemed to resolve after about 3 hours after taking 1/2 of a 25 mg metoprolol. The onset has always been while running. My normal resting HR is between 38 and 44. After the 5th one started, my heart rate was about 80 while resting and after about 30 minutes at rest it suddenly jumped to 130. I don't know why as I wasn't feeling at all stressed. When it jumped like that, I was very symptomatic. It took me by surprise. My 1/2 metoprolol helped but I stayed in afib overnight. Took a second 1/2 metoprolol the next morning and it resolved in about 2 hours.
I've used two apps on my phone to try to check my pulse. Neither is highly accurate but it does tell me enough to confirm whether or not my HR is irregular. One app gives an indicator that I'm probably in afib. Not as good as an ECG but it gives me a bit of confidence that I know what's going on.

Did you see your e.p. for an EKG? Also sorry it is interfering with your work and hope it improves. Try to relax - know it isn't t easy to do but deep breathing does help with the h.r. Please let us know how you progress? Prayers and hugs!

I once hit 180 while driving and had to call an ambulance. My pill in the pocket beta blocker at that time had stopped working. That was scary.
Hope you're feeling ok. Ended up in resus a few weeks ago. Heart rate 200, BP 180/120. Docs tried drugs and then shocked my heart back into normal rythm. Now on 4 different types of meds: BP, beta blocker, anti arrythmia & xarelto (previous history of massive PEs). I wasn't really given an option not to have the cardioversion as I was hypoxic (not getting enough oxygen). Only real side effects from the drugs now are feeling v. tired - and what I would describe as "flat"...
Taking your pulse or using a pulse-ox only counts contractions that move blood. Due to the irregular filling in AF you may not feel every contraction.
I use AliveCor with my iPad or phone. Piece of cake.
My first AFIB was sustained 185 24/7 for a whole week. (Yes is was not smart enough to go to the Dr's office). Stayed in the hospital for 9 days. Had the 1st ablation 3 months later...
3rd ablation HR was sustained 165 for 3 days. That time I had my portable home EKG machine It read 165 at home. Took it to the ER and when admitted, their EKG machine showed 165, and my still showed 165 (even between the palms of my hands). For me, it was accurate. Once again meds, did not help.

PS: I asked my Doc for the last CV if I could be awake for the split second shock. He said he'd loose his license....
