Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.

I have Graves Disease (hyperthyroidism)... and have been in remission for 20 years. However, I just discovered this:

When they say "heart disease"...... would this include Afib??????

I thought this would be interesting to any afibbers with hypo or hyper thyroidism.

It affects afib. They check for that as one of the first things to check... like sleep apnea.

Yes , and if you solve the thyroid problem, you can make the a fib go away.

My brother had one episode of A Fib in July. Forced to stay in the hospital 10 before the Drs. decided to try conversion. He's been in rhythm ever since .
A few days ago, he told me they discovered low thyroid in the hospital and started him on meds for that.
Was shocked that no one, including his cardiologist, ever told him that A Fib and thyroid problems can be connected!

Right, but my question is... if you're thyroid levels are normal (which mine are now).... is there any connection. I went to the EP today, and he said no.

I was sent for a TSH blood test for thyroid levels the very next day after my diagnoses. I have treated low thryoid, so the test was good and nothing has been mentioned about my thyroid since. I believe it has no bearing now.

My cardiologist said that hypothyroid does not cause afib but hyper thyroid can.
