Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Support Group
Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
IT's good to know not to take supplements willy nilly. We really need to research the things we take.
I think I will continue to not take the fish oil.
Thanks for sharing!
But many people are looking for a reason for their afib that is supplement or diet related when unfortunately it is really other heart problems or age related. Not to say their aren't triggers, it's just that people shouldn't stop taking something because it affects another person. If I did that blindly, I wouldn't be eating fish, red meat, tofu, soy products, poultry that isn't organic, peanut butter, and on and on.
My theory is to start with a heart healthy diet and test it out.
Just curious... do you think MOST people are affected by fish oil that have afib? Or some?
How about olive oil?
Just curious.

Here is my response to what you are saying:
Sure, I agree with you that supplements affect people differently. So, everybody has to test a supplement to see if it makes a difference for her/him for better or worse.
You said: "But many people are looking for a reason for their afib that is supplement or diet related when unfortunately it is really other heart problems or age related."
Well, actually, most people with afib do NOT have any structural heart problem that the doctors could have found. They just have the afib. I "absolutely" believe diet and supplements have a big role in afib when no other heart problem or thyroid issue is found. I am the living example of it. That is the reason I try to share my experience with others.
I know you go by what the medical community says which is, diet does NOT have any effect on afib. That is okay. But, I know that is NOT correct. Just like any other disorder, afib is diet related too. Remember a decade ago that the doctors believed that cancer just happens. Well, now research after research has proven most disorders are diet related.
Also, age is NOT a disease by itself. Yes, we get various disorders with age but there is always a reason behind them. That is the job of a doctor to find the reason behind a problem and fix it, no matter how old the person is. For example, at older age, blood sugar spikes after eating, which causes sleepiness and feeling tired after a big meal. Well, this problem happens to most older people. It is easily fixed. But, most doctors do NOT know how and they give you a diabetes test, which you pass. Or they tell you it is because you are getting old, which an absolute BS.
Blood sugar spike after eating is very bad and dangerous. So far, my mom and a friend at work got a stroke after a big meal, which research has show it can happen if the blood sugar spikes. They both passed the diabetes test. The sugar spike is different from diabetes. It is easily fixed. So, age should NOT be a sentence for getting sick specially with today's medical advances. That goes for afib too.

What is a healthy diet? Is that what the doctors tell you? Diet with fish oil (or Omega-3 fatty acid), lots of greens, and fish like salmon? Well, that was the type of diet, which was giving me afib 10 years ago. That is exactly my point that this site should have out-of-the-box ideas and not what the medical community say. People hear about a healthy diet from their doctor. But, here, when they read that diet has actually caused afib in someone else, it should raise a RED FLAG. After all, reading the experience of others should be the primary goal to come to this site. It is for me.
And yes, they should stop taking any supplement or eating any food which gives problem to someone else. Just MAY BE, if they do, their afib stops too. It is all about trying different things for afib since even the so called doctors do NOT have the answer. If you do NOT try, you never find out if something works or NOT. It is all about trying.
Last not least, yes, I think some people with afib are affected by fish oil or other stuff that hey are eating. Their afib MIGHT stop if they stop the fish oil and/or the other stuff which may be their trigger.
I DO NOT believe afib just happens. It is diet/stress related. The time will come that the doctor will say this too. It will be in our life time, I promise :-) I know you are SOLD by what the doctors tell you, well, I am NOT.
By the way, I have NOT seen anybody who got afib after having olive oil, including myself. It appears to be the safest oil when you are prone to afib. Even coconut oil (virgin) causes a slight afib in myself sometimes.
petey, when it comes to afib, we are two very different people in our way of thinking and approach. So, we have to agree to disagree.

Pretty soon we will be able to eat nothing and do nothing!!! Ha!!
One night I decided to take 2 1200mg fish oil pills (from Puritan's Pride). I was back in NSR without a pause within 30mins. I'm not sure if this was a coincidence, but I decided to try taking a 1200mg pill morning, noon, and with dinner (brand: Norwegian Gold). Over 4 weeks, my random fib reduced to episodes of PVCs and short bouts of fib (on and off for a few minutes) only at night after getting in bed. I've cut down to 1-2 pills in the day and have not had an episode since.
This was just my experience and I couldn't be certain that the fish oil did or didn't have any direct correlation. But I continue to take them and feel great.
Good to know some good comes out of fish oil . Hope you remain in NSR!!
