Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
Hello everyone- I have great news (unrelated to Afib) but wanted to share my news with you all! I was recently offered a job at our local hospital as a patient care tech on the cardiac step down unit. I just received official word today that I have been cleared for hire with all the background check, competency testing and medical evaluation now done. I will be attending orientation next week. I am very excited! In addition to direct patient care, I will be drawing blood samples for labs and completing EKGs. The position also requires me to cover for monitor tech as needed in the monitor room. I will be given a competency test/rhythm recognition test for this part of the job description during clinical orientation. I am so happy to get my foot in the door and am excited for future opportunities with this hospital. Thanks for letting me share my good news with you all!! I hope all have a great weekend! -Carrie

Wonderful news:) So happy for you and what a great opportunity. I know you will be very good at this. Have you worked this kind of job before? It sounds so interesting and given you having Afib, you already know a lot and will learn more.

Christine: Thanks! I am really looking forward to getting started. I have done EKGs and blood draws when I was in the Army Reserves (medic) but that was over 20 years ago :) The nurses I am going to be working with know that I have not used these skills for a long time but they told me, EKGs and veins are still the same, nothing changed :) as they joked with me. They were okay with me not having any recent work experience in the medical field. They said they liked my attitude and are willing to train a person with a positive attitude. So it is a perfect situation for me :) I know it will all work out great!

My doctor installed a tiny "Reveal" monitor in my chest this morning. Now I can send information to my doctor when I go into a-fib (happens mostly during night). The nurses and technicians were very nice and efficient. It seems like an interesting job. Good luck to you. Marya
