Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Support Group

Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.

Hello everyone- I have great news (unrelated to Afib) but wanted to share my news with you all! I was recently offered a job at our local hospital as a patient care tech on the cardiac step down unit. I just received official word today that I have been cleared for hire with all the background check, competency testing and medical evaluation now done. I will be attending orientation next week. I am very excited! In addition to direct patient care, I will be drawing blood samples for labs and completing EKGs. The position also requires me to cover for monitor tech as needed in the monitor room. I will be given a competency test/rhythm recognition test for this part of the job description during clinical orientation. I am so happy to get my foot in the door and am excited for future opportunities with this hospital. Thanks for letting me share my good news with you all!! I hope all have a great weekend! -Carrie

This is a huge change from your former occupation (wasn't that as a real estate appraiser ?). Having had four careers along my life journey myself, I can certainly appreciate the need to follow ones inspirations.

Congratulations Carrie, your patients will be so lucky to have someone who understands what they are going through. I want to wish you the best of success and happiness, and I want to thank you for all your support and kind words when Chris was having so much trouble with his afib episodes. He is doing great now thank god. Thanks to you and many others on this website, we knew with time things would calm again and they did. So, with that being said congrats and enjoy your new path...you definitely deserve it!

Paul: You are correct. I am a real estate appraiser and will still be working in that capacity 2-3 days per week but much lighter workload. I will be working at the hospital 3 days days per week, 12 hour shifts. After 3 months, I will be eligible for their healthcare plan.

Great news Carrie, enjoy your new job. The technicians who have given my EKGs have asked me what AFIB felt like - but of course you will know exactly what afibbers are feeling when you see those crazy lines!
