Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Support Group
Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.

It made me so sick for a year that I finally took myself off of it. I got terrible panic attacks. The minute I stopped the digoxin they stopped. I told my cardiologist and my GP that I refuse to take it and they gave me Metoprolol and Diltiazem and I feel wonderful now. But that's just MY experience. Good luck. Carol Miller

Ray, I do take digoxin . I started with that amount and months later got to cut it in half. I had too much of it and the metoprolol too and that was cut to 50 aday, half in the morning half in the evening. I take digoxin only once a day in the evening. I get to cut the pills in half. Had to be cut as that was what I took when so sick. My heart settled down to normal. I taken since late July a year ago. Does I am on now seems to agree okay with me. Since the doctor cut it only twice for a little bit my heart has beat like 120. What I do does not seem to bother heart. I am doing okay on it now. I still take warfarin and my next test if July 28 th. I was stessed both times it did beat too fast. He tells me next time it beats to fast to come in. All in all I seems to be doing okay. My first attack of this heart problems started a year ago next week with a week in the hospital. My kids take me to big city to shop and we eat out as it takes so long. I watch what I eat there. Broiled fish and mashpotatoes and lettuce salad. Ice berg type and I presume Vit K in the dressing too. Karen thought be okay if I ate only one biscuit with it. Some times I do not. That is my Vit K for that day. Lettuce and dressing. Hopefully my test will be in the middle again next week. I stil walk my mile a day and do it early with this heat.

It is very difficult to compare individual's medication. I am on 3, 62.5 Digoxin daily which gives me a level of .9 or 1.00. I am ok on this medication although I do have episodes about once a month lasting between 3-6 hrs. I was on Diltiazem which was great at first but my legs were swollen all the time and in the end had to stop taking it. I don't have any psychological effects from Digoxin as far as I can see. I have added 25 mg metroprolol to reduce episodes and to lower blood pressure. I have taken aquite a range of meds over the past 20 years and I don't have too many left to try. I am making the best of the current ones and trying to stay away from the heavy duty ones. I am now allergic to Flecainaide after taking it for 7 years and not keen to try Amiodarone. We don't have Multag here in Australia. You have to be very patient with meds and give them afair go unless you have unacceptable reactions. Best wishes, Ruth

I started on digoxin about 8 months ago. Around that time I started having panic attacks and my Dr. put me on Klonopin prn for this. I told my cardiologist my meds might be causing some of my problems and he says digoxin and Diltiazem shouldn't be causing side effects. That it's just the afib. It's a revelation to me that it is possible I'm right. I'm going to tell him next time I see him to change my meds.

For years I have been on alprazalam 1 mg.bid for panic attacks. I firmly believe this is why my A Fib has remained asymptomatic. I never even suspected A Fib,, because I've never felt the rapid heartbeat, and I credit it to the alprazalam. I think that A Fib is scary for people, and it doesn't hurt to be on an anxiety drug to help control the situation. I'm taking Sotalol and feeling fine on it, and my Warfarin. I could switch to Pradaxa, but it's more expensive, and i have my own monitor to test my INR...so why bother?
