Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Support Group
Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
My triggers are:
Alcohol. I used to be able to tolerate a couple of beers a week but as of this year my alcohol tolerance is one or two per month.
Chocolate. As of Dec2013 this is a new trigger for me. sigh.
Aspartame - in fact I wonder if the introduction of aspartame is one of the underling causes of the afib epidemic. We here are too young to have afib! But I digress ...
Salt. As of 2013 Pizza with lots of great salty toppings is a trigger. I am guessing it is the salt in the pizza but I don't really know. It might be some of the toppings like pepperoni.
Caffeine as in half caff is ok in moderation ( a 6 oz cup or two)
I am glad to find you all and know that you understand the fears that go with AF.
I'm off to the USA in 6 months or so, so learning more about AF will help me feel reassured as I travel off-shore
Trust your hearts were calm over the Christmas festivities!
Here is a URL to see what the signs look like:

It's just if it goes out on the 12 hr flight.... no H signs there!
I'm thinking plenty of hydration, relaxing (I'm not so keen on flying) as much as I can, and having a faster acting 50mg of flecainide on hand if I need to use it. Haven't thus far. Have only taken a second 100mg slow release on after a 4 hour episode in October. This finally reverted, but I had a second episode in the night which I figured was probably the extra flecainide in me.
Haven't (touch wood) had a long episode since, which is great, but have a had a few 30s clusters.
Thanks all, m
Another possible trigger could have been that Zpack. Zithromycin has been linked to arrythmias.
My symptoms are not particularly bothersome. Irregular HB, (below 85)
fatigue, and dehydration.
Episodes in Dec. 12/6 after drinking lots of champagne at our condo's Holiday Party, then on12/19? 12/29?.
On New Years Eve out for a filet mignon dinner and champagne. No AF
New Years Day Brunch- Lots of good food and lots of champagne. No AF. Since then I have been having a 3oz glass of wine with dinner. NO AF? I did have a heavy meal this evening.
I'm coming into the AF dangerous 9-13 day period. I'll try to avoid
my triggers and hopefully avoid an AF episodes.
I'm looking forward to this being a good year for all of us.

In the evening I had plans with condo friends to go to a jazz club to hear another condo friend sing. I wasn't planning on drinking during an episode but the wine was flowing. To my surprise it didn't seem to matter and later in the evening I self converted. No meds involved.
This morning I'm up 2#. If my AF is on a schedule I can expect an episode in the next 9-13 days
Like Petey stated in his list I've been sure X triggered me on one occasion then on another with twice as much X have no effect at all.

Last night I ushered at the 81st Opening Gala of the SF Ballet Season. A wonderful evening. Before going to bed I had some fruit which I always do after volunteer ushering 4x/wk.
Early in the AM I awoke with an irregular HB. Pushed back to sleep. Checking my pulse I know I'm still in AF. I believe my episodes are on their own time schedule. Is this part of a self-fulfilling prophecy? I don't think so. Hopefully I will self-convert today carrying on with my regular activities and ushering tonight at SFJAZZ.
NSR to us all!
