Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia) which involves the two small, upper heart chambers (the atria). Heart beats in a normal heart begin after electricity generated in the atria by the sinoatrial node spread through the heart and cause contraction of the heart muscle and pumping of blood.
Hello to all....I wanted to share an update on my husband Christopher's ablation. Just a reminder he is 48, and diagnosed in May 2012. He is in good health and has always been. He had his ablation November 9th 2012. 7 weeks post ablation he had an afib episode that converted after about 6 hours. He's experienced PAC's throughout his healing which he caught on a monitor because they were making him concerned. He has been in NSR since his last episode of AFIB which the Ep told him not to worry about. He went in for his post op yesterday and was taken off of the Xarelto, but put on a Holter Monitor to check for any silent AFib. His doctor feels that the surgery was successful, and wants have him wear a Holter Monitor periodically to check for episodes of silent afib. We are keeping our fingers crossed that he doesn't have any more episodes, but know that a second surgery may be required. I've been in NSR for 16 months since my first ablation.
Also knew going in for my ablation that sometimes a second one is needed. The Holter tests are a necessary nuisance. Always worry before hand------then feel such relief when they are normal. Had to promise the EP that I would call his office if A Fib ever returned.
Last week I was rushed to the ER with a severe food allergy. (found out I'm allergic to mangoes) . It was a classic reaction with my face and throat swelling up. Noticing my heart rate was at 113, So the first thing I ask the RN is "Am I in A Fib?!! " Fortunately I wasn't---- it was the steriods and other meds .
Having A Fib sure changes your outlook !
So happy to hear things are going well. As they say, during the first 3 mos, a fib can happen. I'm hoping that is an isolated incident for your husband and he is well on his way to an a fib free life!!
