I too had an afib ablation on 1/31/12 at whc and they damaged my phrenic nerve as well. My right diapraghm is paralyzed. I am on oxygen round the clock at home.

chocolover: How long did they say you would be in this condition? Wghere did you get the ablation? What are they saying? Sorry you had this problem. petey

Chocolover, Mine was only paralyzed on the right side. I don't require oxyygen but I do sleep with a cpap. It is gradually getting better. At first I couldn't lie down flat and especially on my back. I now sleep on my back and flat. I went to a pulmonologist and he said that many abdominal and chest wall muscles will compensate so I took up Yogic breathing exercises and tried to develope those muscles. It has helped tremendously. I'm sorry you too have to deal with this. It will get better.

i was at Washington Hospital Center in DC. I was in the hospital for 4 weeks. I had aflutter ablation, cardioversion, and an AFIB ablation within two weeks. I could not breathe after the procedure. I got pneumonia and my lung collapsed (actelatsis) all the trauma to my body caused my mild asthma to become severe. It took almost 2 weeks to diagnose that is was a phrenic nerve injury.

My right diaphragm is very high so my lung is very compromised. I have less than one half of the lung capacity I had four years ago.

If I take the oxygen off my pulse-oxygen drops to the 80s. I have been this way for 4 months. I am in a lot of pain and because of the tikosyn I am limited to the medicines I can take.

I was told the average time is 6-8 months. My pulmonology is wonderful, he said he might have heard some air movement at my last appt. I am going to pulmonary rehab soon and I will take another sniff test in June to see if my diaphragm is healing.

Wow! Mine wasn't near that severe. I still do get out of breath easily but even that is getting better. My Dr. told me last week that I also am getting some good breath sounds now. I am going July 18 for an ablation for flutter. I think it will be much easier this time. I'm going in the hospital tomorrow to get on Tikosyn. That for some strange reason unnerves me more than the ablation. Go figure.

Chocolover. Who actually performed your ablation? Do you know?

Shantima ~ why are you just now going on tikosyn? Do you still have AFIB? I have been in a normal sinus rhythm for four months now, so it seems to have worked for me.

Tikosyn is very scarey stuff ~ everything and I mean everything has a problem with it. I had to go off of it for a week so I could finish an antibiotic for pneumonia.

Chocolover, I'm scheduled for aflutter ablation in July and the Dr. wants me in sinus rythym until then. I just got out of the hospital today. I did react poorly at first and they had to add another drug, metoprolol,to stabilize it. They're trying to get me in earlier but the procedure rooms are booked solid. This really has been a long hard row. On the plus side the new Hopkin Hospital is amazing.
