Asthma is a disease of the human respiratory system where the airways narrow, often in response to a "trigger" such as exposure to an allergen, cold air, exercise, or emotional stress. This airway narrowing causes symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing, which respond to bronchodilators.
When I was a senior in high school, I went to Italy with my class as a graduation trip. While there, my roommate gave me some kind of bronchitis she had been carrying around, and combined with all the second hand smoke in Italy, I developed a nasty cough. I then returned from the trip, and went on a mission trip to Nicaragua where I dug wells, and swallowed a lot of dust. As a result, that cough lasted about 5 months, and led to bruised ribs, along with morphing my asthma in some way. That summer, I had to sleep sitting up, do about 4-5 nebulizer treatments a day, and at one point I couldn't laugh without triggering an asthma attack.
I went to the pulmonologist (who I now see about 2-3x a year) and found out that my asthma had taken more a turn towards the chronic cough symptoms. So now, coughs are what I desperately try to avoid when I get ill, or they lead to a nasty lapse back into asthma attacks and wheezing. It's not a matter of my asthma disappearing, it's more a matter of trying to keep a healthy lifestyle and take all precautions not to let myself get in a position where it will return.
So, I don't think your asthma will ever truly go away, I think there are triggers, and when faced with those triggers, it will always rear its ugly head. It's a part of your life, and it is hard to live with, and it doesn't seem fair that something that comes so easily to everyone else turns into a nightmare for asthmatics, but it is something you have to live with.
I don't think it should stop you from living your everyday life, and hopefully you have found some solution that keeps it under control as often as it can. I use advair daily to prevent allergies that will set it off. If I find myself wheezing and my cough worsening, I am prescribed Prednisone, which is a steroid that kills the cough quickly. I hope that the return of your asthma doesn't disrupt your life, and that you find a good way to deal with it, but don't run from it! Treatment is important. I really do recommend creating a relationship with a pulmonologist in your area, it has really helped my asthma in ways i can't express.
In my personal opinion you can try some herbal remedies.
